Hi there.. So here we go. No turning back;) A warm welcome, from the cold and snowy Faroe Islands, to my first blog entry ever! At the moment I'm at home. I've just returned from a 4 weeks, más o menos, trip to Bolivia. For the next three months or so I'll just be hanging out here on the Islands - doing some "Travel in your own country", which is something I definitely haven't done enough of. In august I'll be off to South America for some time, first Brazil and then we'll see what happens from there.. Ok, enough about the future, I'll start with the past. That's always a safe place to start. The first blogs will be from the Bolivia trip and maybe some even older stuff.. Soooo enjoy, I'll see you around:) ... read more

Dont worry people... we are not travelling again (we wish!) but our holidays this year in the Faroe Islands were unusual and photogenic enough to warrant a little write up and a few photos. So here we go mini-blog! For any (most) people who have no idea where the Faroes are; they are a small group of islands north of scotland in the north sea midway between Iceland and Norway. I have a lot of family on my fathers side who live there and so I have been lucky enough to visit a few times as a child but having not visited in 12 years, marc reluctantly joining the family holiday (what do you mean there arent any nightclubs?) and with Sar onboard as a Scancinavian first timer everybody was genuinely excited about this trip as ... read more

Since my last blog, we've visited Suðuroy (Southern isle) to both see the island (which is much less visited by tourists) and visit a metalhead that slept in the same cabin as Klas on the way here. It is always interesting to meet locals, of course, and this time we even got to borrow a car! So we went to see the place where they say that some "Turks" (actually people from one country or the other along the by Christians so-called Barbary Coast) were buried after they had come to get slaves from Suduroy, and then we went to Fámjin, where the first Faroese flag hangs in the church. We also got nice waffles there :-) Yesterday we went to Nólsoy with the small ferry and walked for a while up the hill, although not ... read more

Yes, we ended up at the Faroe Islands this year! I've been wanting to go here for quite some time, and then the occasion turned up to take the ferry from Bergen in Norway, so here we are. Today we mounted Satan. Actually, we went up the mountain Sátan, close to Leynar on Streymoy, the biggest of the Faroe islands. It's almost 666 meters high, and starting from sea level as we did, we had to climb every darn metre. But we conquered Sátan, while fending off his horned, evil, dark minions. But the day actually began with the bus to Vestmanna, which is actually named after people from the British Isles (people from Scandinavia were called Easterners). There, we bought tickets for a boat trip to the caves and mountains on the west side of ... read more

The ferry from Iceland to the Faroe Islands didn´t get attacked by pirates. That´s ok, I´ve got another chance starting today when I sail from here to Norway! It was a somewhat boring trip. Unless you like spending upwards of $55 on dinner, there´s not even much to eat. Oh well, at least it was comfortable enough: the ferry Norrona is a car ferry / cruise ship / cargo carrier, so it has a bunch of luxury options on board, if you´ve got the money for them. I arrived in Torshavn, capital of the Faroes, Friday morning at 8:00am. It´s a nice city. Big enough to have most of the amenities you could want (otherwise you´d have to go to Norway / Iceland / Scotland / Denmark for everything!), small enough, with only 20,000-odd residents, to ... read more

Standing in the midst of some 8000-1000 inebriated Faroese at midnight last night, all of us belting out Faroese songs (me included), I realized I would have a very hard time explaining Olavsøka -- or St. Olaf's Day -- to anyone who had not witnessed it first hand. It is perhaps the most important festival in the Faroes, though only celebrated in Torshavn, the capital. What limited hotel and hostel space is available fills up months in advance, both with tourists and with Faroese traveling from other islands. Although St. Olaf's Day is technically just that, one day (July 29), the party started on Friday night and didn't really wrap up to the wee hours of today. It is a combination religious holiday (celebrating the arrival of Christianity to the islands) and political affair (politicians ... read more

Sitting on a grassy hill above the village of Gøta, watching the festivities of the surprising international G! music festival unfolding on the beach below -- and listening to the haunting voice of my now favorite Faroese singer, Eivør -- I couldn't help thinking: this is what the Faroe Islands are all about. Here was an international music festival, drawing performers from Europe and North America, in a little village that was also one of the major sites of the Færeyinga Saga, the farm of the powerful Faroese chieftain, Trondur i Gøtu (and the hometown of Eivør). And the bay around which the the three part village is stretched, enclosed by the high treeless yet oh-so-green hills of the islands, was the sight of a grindadrap, or pilot whale killing, just a week before the ... read more

Jan and I sat enjoying smuggled cocktails at the airport bar while waiting the 2 extra hours for our flight to belatedly land. The small plane dumped off its passengers and within minutes we were sitting inside the 19 year old plane which looked/smelled like it was 50. Jan’s cousin was on board as a stewardess and so she reserved the best beverages for us to enjoy on our outward journey to the north Atlantic. The pilot took an extra long round before touching down since the weather was perfect to enjoy the glorious views of the Faroe’s from above. This did not sit well with Tommy who was busting for the toilet and actually went as far as looking for an empty bottle… We arrived, passed through security with no apparent issues, loaded into the ... read more

Day 58: Monday 3rd. July 2006: Sunny with patchy cloud: Goodbye Iceland and here we come Faroes. Good flight and very green and mountains coming into the Faroes and from the airport to Torshavn. Well, we thought there were hills to walk down before, now it is mountains to climb as there is no bus service to the hostel but oh the view is spectacular out over the harbour, with horses and sheep in the fields around us. We did get a taxi from the harbour with cases to carry, but after a late buffet meal at the hotel by the hostel, it was about a 3 km walk to the nearest shop being at the Shell service station and then the 3 km walk back up the mountain. I must say we are fitter ... read more
