We've arrived Tallinn at 2:00pm from Riga, 400km East of Latvia, and we can tell the big difference betweens the two : Tallinn has the similar size of Riga but the city is so much busier, touristy, expensive, and commercial as in anywhere else in Western Europe, it was quite hard to believe my eyes that I was stepping on the old Soviet Republic. The tram rides from the Central Bus Station to the Old Town, costs almost EEK 20 (US$2) each and ten minutes later, we got off just outside the UNESCO Heritage Old Town of Tallinn. img=http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs114.snc1/4839_121776620545_528085545_3367712_6962696_n.jpg Our first day in Tallinn was a beautifully hot sunny day. We started at the Viru Gates, the two picturesque towers as one of the most famous landmarks of the old city wall. Once past them, we ... read more

I can say that last summer I've spent just perfectly. Maybe, coz' it was my first huge experience of travelling along. I had an opportunity to feel the atmosphere of complete freedom and permissiveness (as long as money could allow :P). My views on life have been changed and nothing could be done to it anymore - I became a new person)) ANd I'm happy with this! Now, I'm gonna be some kinda of promoter and reccoment everyone to visit Baltic states) My trip included 5 countries: Estonia (as a basic point), Sweden, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania. During the month I saw and got to know more than during the last several years..) Hm, and not because I wasn't interested in all this stuff, but because I didn't understand the way of getting this info (I ... read more

St Petersburg onwards OK guys - here's the latest update. I believe I left you having got the Red Arrow to St Petersburg. Before I head into the next section, let me just give you a quick overview of the journey so far. China - high - Great Wall - we did Mutianu but the better one to do is where you walk one of the old sections for about 4kms. The section we did was one of the more touristy parts and had been restored. Still a fantastic thing to see though. Lows - the smog and the heat. Quirky saying - Lady, Lady, you wan ride in Hutong? Mongolia - high - staying out in the Gers and doing the horseriding even though it was bloody freezing. People were absolutely lovely - UB was ... read more

Geo: 59.4392, 24.7586We left the ship and were taken by shuttle bus into the town. Lovely old buildings and streets. Looks like a mini Prague. Only down side is it is full of tourist groups. We just strolled around and stopped for a beer outside a bar in lovely sun. Walked back to the ship rather than waiting for the bus as an excellent lunch with wine was waiting... read more

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Today was a glorious day. The weather was superb and we went on a bike tour of Tallinn. The bike tour was fantastic. If you are ever in Tallinn I can totally recommending going to the City Bike Hostel and doing their 2 hour tour of Tallinn. The bike that I had was the coolest bike ever. It was an old school bike and I felt exactly like Anne of Green Gables when I was riding it around. We started the ride off in the old town of Tallinn and then headed off towards the suburbs. We rode through Kadriorg Park which is a glorious park about 2kms out of town. The park as well as the Kadriorg Palace were designed by Peter the Great for his wife Catherine I. From the park we were led ... read more

I met up with the Intrepid tour last night (6pm) in Helsinki for the start of my Baltic adventures. There are 8 of us on the tour as well as our tour guide Andy (a girl from NZ). This morning the Interpid tour took us to Estonia. We started off with a nice and relaxed departure time of 10am from the hotel and took a local tram down to the ferry station. The ferry was just like the Cook Strait ferrry, although we did have the added pleasure of having some bingo being played (in Finnish) in the section that we were sitting in. The ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn is approx 2.5 hours so we arrived in Tallinn at 2:00pm. From the ferry we had to walk to our hotel which was about a 15 ... read more

May 5, 2009 Ferry: Viking Line, Helsinki - Tallinn Hotel: Old House Hostel, Tallinn, Estonia, $5.44 Today I was planning on heading over to Tallinn in Estonia via ferry. After breakfast I caught the metro and tram (with 2 minutes remaining on my 24-hr transit pass) to the Viking terminal. Several ferries make the short crossing over to Estonia every day; they are very popular for the locals as the ships have duty free alchohol sales. The deck class fare was 32EUR one-way but they make up for it in booze sales! Everyone was there with lots of empty carryon bags/rollaboards; most don't even get off in Tallinn and just come back on the return ferry. Some of the passengers came already pretty well lubricated and it was only 10:30AM. The ferries are floating hotels with ... read more

Day 2-3 (May 4-5) Arriving in Tallin, Estonia around 2pm we had about a 15 minute walk to the hotel, which is a sports hotel and has full gym, pool etc. Our orientation walk around Tallin was really informative. We learned how for the last 6 or 7 hundred years Estonia has been ruled by various countries, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, and Russia mutltiple times. Spending very little time being independent. One of the main parts of the economy is tourism, and the old part of town is certainly geared toward that, but it hasn’t detracted too much from the charm of the town, with its remaining wall and towers, old red roofed houses and lanes and many churches. The central square is a lovely place for sitting and watching the world go by. There is an ... read more
