Damn, I'm tired. The last couple of days were rather full on, and here is how it all came about: On Thursday evening, I was taking the plane from Liepaja to Riga. The airport was tiny, there was only one building, you couldn't even call that a terminal. The plane was a Fokker with some 50 seats, but luckily, there were only about 10 other people on board. The flight consisted of taking off, getting a tea, drinking it, preparing for landing. If it just were always so hassle-free... After taking the bus to the centre of Riga, the thing that shouldn't happen happened again: my host wasn't there. So I waited for about 20 minutes, then started asking people if I could use their mobiles, but they either pretended they didn't have one, or were ... read more

Geo: 58.386, 24.4986So ... we decided to fake that we got married to trick a group of common friends that nagged us incessantly about hooking up on this trip. The story was that we got married in Girona, Spain, and that I surprised Mary with a honeymoon in Estonia. Today is the day that we begin to execute the final phase of the plan. This was not an easy thing to pull off since it was a complicated situation. We had to convince everybody that we had been dating since the end of July (no sooner, because that wouldn't have agreed with real life events). We knew that there would be doubters ... but we hoped that people would believe it because they appeared to wish it was true. About 3-4 weeks before the trip, we ... read more

We got up and decided to get to the tourist information and see what there was to do in Parnü; we quickly decided that there's very little there in wet weather. Again we went for a walk around and went into some fashion shops still stuck in the 80's. We then went to a supermarket to get some food. After buying the usual bread and cheese, and some strange chocolate coated kiwi cheese curd snacks, we set off looking for a nice place to eat it. The snacks were interesting to say the least. While walking towards the beach the heavens opened and we hid under some trees. Instead of waiting there for the rain to stop we ran to the shelter of a large building. Once the rain died down we put on our macs ... read more

After a relatively good nights sleep (the best you can have in a tent) we got up for freshly made porridge with breads, cheese and meats. We then chatted to the family and listened to authentic Estonian music before saying goodbye to his wife, Katerin, and her sister, Reet. In the town we visited the museum. It was another castle built by the Teutonic Order during the 13th century after Estonia was conquered. Again it had suffered damage from leaving soviets. In the Second World War German and Russian troops met there and 75% of the town was destroyed in the fighting. We then drove to the University at Tartu, Estonia's university town with 1/5 of the population being students. We went up in the main towers which were in ruins but still sturdy enough to ... read more

Hi Everyone. Well after hot footing into UK for 1 and a half weeks I am back on the road. It really was a quick stop in the UK for a wedding and so my apologies to everyone I missed while I was there. However, my flight out of Stansted on the 6th Aug proved to be one of the hardest connections to make. Arriving in Heathrow from Beijing was just the start of the UK transport issues. I could not get off the first plane to get to my Manchester connection as they had only laid on 1 bus to the terminal for a 300 seater boeing 777. Assuming I would miss my Manchester flight (transfer time to terminal 1 from 4 is 75 mins minimum!) I rushed through passport control etc... only to find ... read more

Geo: 58.386, 24.4986Bussed down the country 127km south on Eurolines to Parnu, staying Koidula Park hotel On Kuninga (more reminisent of a Blackpool B&B I'd say only dearer), beside it was an 18th century Elizabethan church with lovely maroon and ochre brick work and over looking Koidula park. All very nice and the sun was splitting the rocks, so after a walking tour we went to the Superbrand beach the 1st afternoon til after 7pm, seemed to be a really nice place altogether UNTIL we tried to get food. They may as well have had a big sign at the town perimeter saying 'Vegetarian's F. Off', the mexican restaurant had NO bean dishes (I think that is incredible), the turkish had no falafel, and they were too up their own asses in the fancy Italian to ... read more

Rides: 2 cars and a truck Weather: after more days of mostly rain, we finally saw some sun today! And my shoes are dry for the first time in days! Finally properly on the road. We had been standing 20m from the last bus stop along the road to Parnu for approximately 30 seconds when our first ride picked us up. And took us about 20km down the road. To an inconvenient spot. A short walk through a long downpour later, and we got another ride for another 20km or so. Then we waited an hour before a polish truck driver picked us up and took us all the way to the outskirts of Parnu. We had hoped for some sun, or at least, lack of rain, in the supposedly sunny beach-holiday destination or Parnu, but ... read more

On the south west coast of Estonia lies the seaside town of Parnu - Pµnðßæ«»¢“”nµæßðđŋħjĸł@łe¶ŧ←↓→øþ - OK I can't find the "a" with two little dots over it. The "a" in Parnu is one of those, and gives it a quite different sound to the one shown, so different that I had to write down the name in order to purchase a bus ticket. Parnu is Estonia's holiday destination, there is a stretch of sand in a horse shoe shape around two miles long, covered with slightly sunburnt (or very sunburnt) northern europeans. The beach has a nudist area entirely for women (how bizzare?)... which I was unfortunate enough to find myself in this morning (didn't read the signs - Ladies Beach - what does that mean?). It wasn't the pleasant experience I would have imagined ... read more
