August 23, 2006 - August 24, 2006 With our vacation book ended by Stockholm and Copenhagen, we decided that some time spent outside of a major city would be the perfect change of pace. Surveying some of the neighboring options, we opted for Aeroskobing on Aero Island. Aeroskobing is often described as a Danish fairy-tale town containing the perfect countryside comforts that we so eagerly craved.
The trip out to Aeroskobing was no easy task. Our difficulties in finding housing in Copenhagen the night before certainly didn’t simplify our travel plans. Our travel itinerary looked something like this Wednesday morning; Train from Helsingor to Nyborg (traveling back through Copenhagen), bus from Nyborg to Svendborg, ferry from Svendborg to Aeroskobing, total travel time of about 4-5 hours. About the only thing missing was a leg covered on bicycle. We saved that for the following day.
When we arrived in Svendborg, we ended up having about two hours to kill before the next ferry to Aeroskobing arrived. After grabbing some lunch at a small bagel café, we spent the remainder of our time Otis Redding style. Tegan was able to squeeze in a small nap on the dock while I

Once the ferry docked in Aeroskobing, the arrival seemed a tad magical. The clouds suddenly stepped aside to make way for the sun as we made our way up the main stretch of cobblestone road in Aeroskobing. Narrow streets bordered by colorfully, crowded houses set the mood, a feeling as if we had traveled back in time. On many house steps sat various homemade goods for sale on the honor system alone. Well-preserved due to the prohibitions on modern building construction, the town was simply enchanting. Dragging our luggage behind us, we both stopped numerous times to enjoy the view on our way to our pension.
We decided to stay at Pension Vestergade 44; an eight-room hotel perfectly nestled right in the center of the small town. Despite some very minor shortcomings, our stay was positively enjoyable. The pension’s owner really went out of her way to help us feel completely comfortable in our

She took a great interest in each of her guests, which was abundantly clear as she commented on bits of conversation from Wednesday evening while we enjoyed our Thursday morning breakfast. At first, Tegan was a bit uncomfortable with the creepy crawlies in a couple of our room’s window corners. I took care of her concerns, and I’m now happy to report that I am a fully certified exterminator in the town of Aeroskobing.
After we checked in, we spent the remainder of our Wednesday evening wandering around Aeroskobing. Our stroll took us around parts of town, through waterside fields, and eventually to a small beach with the cutest, little accompanying beach houses. Painted various colors and designs, the beach houses were simply fascinating. Smaller then your average shed in size, the message of “less is more” was perfectly clear. Situated so as to have a direct view of the sunset, it was the perfect atmosphere for relaxation.
Thursday morning we woke up early, grabbed breakfast, and headed out with a plan. A breezy, warm day in Aeroskobing, we decided to rent bicycles to tour Aero Island. I picked out a dark green,

Tegan picked out a competitively decrepit black 3 speed with a demanded basket that I nicknamed Black Stallion. This name became a constant debate between us, as she felt the bike should have a more feminine name like Black Beauty. I still stand by Black Stallion, as this bike was a beast…..with a basket!
We headed out for what turned out to be about a 10-mile expedition of the island. At times the ride was strenuous, working our way up the small inclines spread throughout the island. We brought along some water and snacks, so overall it was nothing we couldn’t handle. We stopped at various points to enjoy the scenery that included various beaches, small villages, a 13th century church, and an old-fashioned windmill. We had a lot of fun on our bikes; creating some long lasting memories that I’m sure we’ll never forget.
Worn out from our ride, we grabbed our bags from the pension and headed for the docks. Our time in Aeroskobing was really the ideal turning point in our vacation. The peaceful, quiet, contrasting lifestyle really seemed to make time stop
