The last week at Svanholm has been fairly busy. This will just be a quick summation of what I´ve been up to. On Tuesday I was shoveling gravel and making concrete to help finish a basement in the main building. One of the ladies on the middle floor had her 65th birthday so I helped washing the bathroom and cleaning up. This weekend we went to a party at my friends Gymnasium and didn´t have tickets so we had to be ninjas and climb over the schools roof and sneak inside, it was lots of fun! Then we went to Roskilde last night for a electronic techno party and came back to Svanholm at about 3 in the afternoon to find that we also had to make dinner. It´s been a busy day. I also recieved ... read more

Things in Svanholm have been a bit boring lately as most of the teenagers have gone to Ireland for a week with school. Lucky for them, they will be there for St.Patty´s Day which should be pretty fun. I also got some crappy news from the Roskilde Festival which told me that they have had far too many requests for volunteer work and I will have to apply for 2010 if I want to volunteer. But, the guys came up with a better idea. Instead of volunteering for 24 hours, we will pick bottles at the festival for a few hours each day. One fellow from Svanholm did that 8 hours a day for the entire festival and saved up enough money for a 3 week vacation to Turkey. I´m not sure if that shows you ... read more

Svanholm Update, Things in Svanholm are still going great. I had written a large message a few days ago but one of the other boys needed the computer and accidentally deleted the message. Anyway, I thought I was just give a litte update. The wedding a few weeks back was really interesting and I forgot to mention a few things. The church service and the baptism for their son (Danes often have children before they are married or sometimes do not get married at all) took only 45 minutes in total! After the service, I noticed no one waited to chat or lounge around. The Danes left the church like school kids during a fire drill haha. The other week we decided to go to Copenhagen and have some fun. We got our train tickets, grabbed ... read more

Six months from home, The last few weeks have been full of fun and festivities. We had a wedding last weekend between two of the members at Svanholm and it was quite the party. Free beer and wine, delicious pork and beer, dancing and music. Lots of fun. This weekend was also quite the party I was invited by the boys to another event at their Gymnasium (a Danish High School is called a Gymnasium). They forgot to ask the party coordinator if I was allowed to attend so we figured out an alternative means of getting in (climbing like monkeys through an open window). Again, we had lots of fun and found ourselves stumbling home at 6 in the morning from Skibby to Svanholm (about 3 km). The past two days I´ve spent in recovery ... read more

Denmark has snow! The snow usually comes and goes every couple days or so but it finally decided to snow all day yesterday and it doesnt seem like its going away any time soon! It´s great, we have snow ball fights during coffee break and the kids build snow forts all over the farm. Everybody who has seen me in the past 2 days has always mentioned, ´You probably feel at home, eh?´ Unfortunately, there arent any skating rinks around so I havent showed the guys how to play shinny. Aw well, if I manage to make it until next winter I could crack the bank and buy some skates and teach them a thing or two. They always laugh at me for being so bad at soccer...I always reply,´Yeah well, soccers for girls.´ It drives ... read more

Now that the basement in Svanholm is almost finished Im finally starting to get some alternative types of work. I spent my Monday working behind a tractor in a field in a giant machine with a few other Svanholmers as we sorted between vegetables and rocks. It sounds bad but it was actually fairly enjoyable. We had a radio hooked up inside the machine and the two folks I was working with spoke great English and asked me almost everything you could want to know about Canada. Time went by fast. For the past 3 days Ive been working in a room that is covered almost top to bottom in dust. Anybody who tries to light a cigarette in this place would likely have their body picked up somewhere in Sweden. The room has an ogger ... read more

Things in Svanholm are still going great. New Years in Copenhagen was just insane! Everyone bought their own fireworks and we all headed out to a big house party in the middle of the city. At 11:00, everyone rushed out onto the street and started shooting them off in every direction. It felt a lot more like Baghdad than downtown Copenhagen. After the New Years, things have returned to normal. We continue to find little jobs here and there, working from 8 until 3 from Monday to Friday. Some of us at Svanholm have cleaned up the 'teenager room' aka Galaxon and we've set up a Wii inside with a TV and some couches. I've become really good friends with the guys who live in Svanholm and we're even tossing around the idea of renting an ... read more

I haven't written in the blog for the last few weeks but the reasoning for that is fairly simple...things haven't really changed all that much. Besides the Christmas festivites here at Svanholm (Christmas trees, small parties, a large Christmas festival - similar to the farmers market back home) things are still the same. I work from 8-3 and learn Danish and hang out here. Then to Copenhagen and Roskilde on the weekends. At the moment it isn't really a nice time to go touring around Europe so I'm having loads of fun just staying here and partying with the Svanholm gang. We spend our weekdays planning for the weekend and I practice my Danish little by little. My understanding of Danish is getting quite decent but speaking is still difficult. Writing Danish...forget it. Give me at ... read more

Tout le monde, It's the start of my third week at Svanholm and fortunately for myself things are going just great! The work is comfortable, I have some great friends at the farm, and the chances of getting that tourist visa are looking better and better. My weekdays are fairly simple, I get up at 7:30, I start work at 8:00, I have lunch in the main kitchen (prepared for us by a small army of cooks) at 12:00 and am off by 3:00. After 3:00 I usually hang out with my friends at Svanholm and play video games or learn Danish. On the weekends we try to go to night clubs in Roskilde or Copenhagen (we went to Copenhagen this past weekend) and it's all worked out just great. I'll be heading to Trina and ... read more

Just writing this message in response to a few questions. SO! First I should point out that the idea to get an apartment in Copenhagen is simply an idea, not something that I am seriously considering. Remember, when you're in a foreign country things work at a snails pace, especially when the country you are staying in has a government that is leaning against increased immigration (ie, Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy...etc.) So first of all you have to apply for a work visa or some type of extension. If you're an electronic engineer or a doctor you can get a job almost immediately, your visa will be given immediately as well. If you want to go to school here and are willing to pay around 11,000 dollars per year for tuition, getting a student visa ... read more
