What a great morning today. The weather is sunny and the temperature is perfect. Before our ship arrived in the port of Aarhus, Denmark, the ship sailed through the Fjords of Denmark. I was up early as usual walking the deck watching the sunrise soaking in the beautiful and fresh air of the sea. Breakfast was in the dining room today. Had my favorite type of egg, vulcanized (or over hard) eggs. Everyone makes fun of me eating these types of eggs. We did not eat until 9:15am. A few hours we ate lunch because our tour started at 12:30pm.
The ship arrived in port, Aarhus Denmark. This is a very small port compared to the other ports we have visited. Not much activity happening here. Our tour today included two important areas in Aarhus; Randers City Center and Randers rainforest (manmade).
Our family was not real excited about this tour today because the city is unknown to us and the description of the tour was limited. We really did not have any expectation. The tour time was 3.5 hours. The tour initially started off very boring when we drove through a plain town, stopped at the top of
a hill next to a church to photos of the city, however the trees/bushes were over grown. However once we arrived at the rainforest, this all changed.
Randers Rainforest
This stop was the Randers Regnoskov Tropical Zoo. We had two hours here. The exterior of the building was plain; however it had the same feel of the Moody Gardens in Galveston Texas. The tour guide warned us that the interior of this building would be very warm and humid, almost like Houston. We were not disappointed from the heat perspective.
Our first section of the interior dome zoo was Africa. Most of the animals in the Africa were running wild except for those that could pose danger to us. These animals/reptiles were native to this country. There were various monkey’s, birds, bats (yes bats that were uglier than sin), and varying ground type of animals. This is the first time I have ever visited a zoo where the animals are almost next to you which allow great photo opportunities. One of my favorite photos were the close up of the birds. It was so interactive, the kids loved it and it was great hearing and seeing them laugh.
By the time we reached the top of the dome, it was warmer and more humid than Houston.
The next section was the South American dome. These animals/reptiles were native to this country. As in the Africa, the whole experience was interactive. We were able to get close up photo shots of the monkeys and also watch the prairie dogs wrestle over of a hanging rope. It was great watching them roll over and fight each other and squeal in having fun. There were a few ducks laying on a rock, one with their head up and the other laying down the side of the rock. This reminded us so much of how our dogs act. Good stuff.
Randers City Center
Our tour guide, who was originally from the UK, however moved to Denmark 25 years ago, took us on a walking tour of the city center. Very interesting observation, most shops were closed on Sunday. This means the city center; normally bustling with people was virtually a deserted city. We were the biggest group of the day. Much to my surprise, the city center was beautiful and contrasted well the old building and culture with the new.
The tour guide did an awesome job pointing out the contrasts referring to old parts of a building and new parts.
We arrived back at the ship around 4:45pm. Dinner this evening included Prime Rib, yum. Later in the evening my wife and I visited one of the lounges and did a little dancing and then watched my daughter learn some of ballroom dancing moves. Lights out in our room was at 12:00am, midnight, because we had to wake up in the morning at 5:30am for our early morning departure to Berlin Germany.
