Overbooked hostel in amsterdamNot much more to add about amsterdam other than the hostel I was staying in (the one where i had a dorm room to myself on the first night) ended up overbooked and we had 3 French girls end up sleeping on the floor!
Oh and there was a kitten who attacked my feet each morning when going down for breakfast! I was very tempted to put it in my bag and take it with me! But I've already packed too much.
The next stop was hamburg. The train stopped just before the German border to allow everyone to get off and have a smoke which I thought was very European!
The city itself seemed busy and after a nice bowl of pasta and a beer we walked around the red light district and bars. After being in amsterdam the hamburg red light district felt very seedy, but we where there rather late. Then we settled into what we expect to be the nicest place we will sleep, a special offer at a four star hotel near the city centre meant we had proper beds, shower, hair dryer etc for the price of a hostel (about £14 each).
Marc on the ferry to copenhagen The morning started with curryworst (sausage, some sort of salsa sauce and curry powder, served with a roll) which tasted amazing. We had another couple of sausages before the day was out! And it was a cheap option available at the station.
Then before we knew it we where off to Copenhagen. It was very odd when our entire train boarded the ferry!
The first thing we noticed where people walking around bare feet (occasionally with flowers in there hair) and people at the train stations looking in the bins even though they didn't appear to be homeless. We obviously missed something or the homeless people in Northern Europe are doing ok for themselves!
We've also come to the conclusion that Scandinavians are all happy, smiley and attractive people. It's like everyone walked out of a magazine cover!
This was also the beginning of our wild camping section of our trip. On the first night we found a very secluded spot only 5 minutes by train from Copenhagen Central station at amager faelled. It wasn't the flattest ground but we saw several deer, a pheasant and all sorts of small creatures and insects. Very much
Camping in amager faelledfelt like wild camping!
The second night we decided to go a bit further out and see if we could find some flatter ground but after walking a couple of miles with our packs we decided on a less than perfect spot in amongst some trees. It was rather eery there but it did the job (lots of bugs).
We had a chance to see Copenhagen castle and gardens, wander around the city, decided against tivoli gardens (theme park) and found a couple of really nice bars with very friendly staff.
And then today we began our journey up from Copenhagen to Gothenburg. We had been looking forward to a nice train journey with no changes and a few hours sleep but naturally with our luck that wasn't going to be the case. In Sweden the train workers are on strike.
I asked when the strike was ending (how terribly British of me assuming it would last a day or two and all have been announced in advance) and got the reply "well I hope it's soon, it's been over two weeks so far!".
So instead we got the train to the airport where we
At the parkfollowed an elderly Australian woman (we decided she knew what she was doing far better than us!) to a bus stop where we got the bus across the border (and an epic bridge) into Malmo hilley, from where we got the metro to Malmo central and finally (with a couple of hours to look around first) onto a high speed train (operated by a different train company) to Gothenburg.
Which is where I'm sitting writing this blog on the trains free wifi!
Hopefully we find somewhere to camp tonight as it's getting late and we have quite a way to go yet. Anyway, that's enough for now, I'll check back in a few days!
