KOEBENHAVN Day 77
I arrived in Berlin and made it on to my next train to Copenhagen. At one point my train boarded a ferry. Isn’t that funny?!? My train was on a boat. I arrived in Copenhagen and immediately liked it. The city just has a really great feel to it. There is no wonder that the Danes are the happiest people in the world.
KOEBENHAVN Day 78
Much like Ireland, the museums in Copenhagen are free. Since I do enjoy museums and to make it even better they are free I decided to make my first stop the National Museum. It is a really neat natural history museum with a number of different exhibits. The biggest exhibit is the history of man kind in the world and Denmark in particular. They had some really nice artifacts and really good information available. The information was really easy to take in and was smaller tidbits of good info rather than overwhelming amounts of info that is too much to process as you walk through a museum.
I really enjoyed the museum and quickly lost three hours to it with out even realizing. I really enjoyed
all of the exhibits. There were a few things on display that really wowed me. The first was a ball with smaller balls inside of it. Now at first you may think that isn’t very interesting but wait till I tell you that… the ball is one solid piece of ivory and that all smaller balls inside were carved out of the one piece of ivory, see my picture of it and you will better understand. Imagine the amount of work that would have taken to complete without shattering any of the outer balls while working on the inner layers. The next ‘wow’ piece was a table that had a blurred painting on it, which again doesn’t seem like much. But in the centre of this table is a chrome cylinder that when you look at it the blurred painting on the table suddenly comes together to be one clear portrait, again see the pictures. I just don’t understand how: 1) a mind could come up with the idea and 2) how on earth could you figure out how to execute the idea. I literally stood there starring at the thing for a good 15minutes. But really…how?
The funniest
part of the museum was when I went through the ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome portion that had a greek gods section. Well guess what was randomly dispersed in the Hercules display case. Take a look at my pictures to find out. Lol One of these things is not like the other!
I finally pried myself away from the museum and headed over to Christainhaven. This is a neighbourhood that housed a group of ‘free thinkers’ that took over old army building in the 70’s (I think) and named it a separate society where people can have freedom to do as they please, which resulted in a lot of drugs being consumed. The little society stayed and blossomed and still exists on some level today. The whole neighbourhood is really nice though with some lovely churches and little restaurants, cafes and shops along the waterways.
All day long I had been singing the soundtrack to the Little Mermaid. Why, you may ask. Well, there is a statue named the Little Mermaid by the river. I was excited, understandably, to see the statue. I walked all the way to the location of the statue to find not the little
mermaid but a sign. This sign stated the following, ‘the little mermaid has gone to Shanghai and will return in November 2010, images of her time in Shanghai will be placed in her location at the end of April 2010.’ Whose bright idea was it to send a tourist attraction to China? I don’t care if it is a world expo you don’t send away pieces of your city. And I am two weeks early for even the replacement images to have arrived. Jeezzeee to be a lutes! I sadly walked away singing my little mermaid songs.
Thankfully my long walk to the mermaid location was not in vain as it is in the same area as the old fortress. It is a really neat star shaped piece of land surrounded by a river. The land is built up high to protect the fortress within. I walked around the battlements viewing the fortress commune below. At one end is a nice windmill. As I rounded the last point of the star it began to rain. As it was also 5:30pm I decided to make my way back towards the hostel as it would take about 30-40minutes.
I stopped
at a grocery store on my way so that I had some food for dinner and snacks for my train ride to Stockholm tomorrow.

What a great day.
This sounded like another perfect day, with the exception of the lutes travel hiccup of a site being closed LOL. No pictures so I could not see the wonderful exhibit pieces you spoke of. Happy travels. Mom
