Maybe I´m not supposed to admit that I flushed a coin worth 4 dollars down the toilet by accident. But I have to laugh at myself for it. Sometimes things happen so fast.
Other than general touristy activities, Margaret and I will hang out at the kollegium in Albertslund (which apparently the Danes consider one of their "ghettos") where a lot of international students live. She has kitchen duty this week, so we have met a lot of characters hanging out in the kitchen. There are two boys from Spain that cooked this huge meal the other night. They made it in steps and it was very odd to watch. First they placed a piece of bread next to both of their plates, along with a piece of fruit. Next they made rice and put them on their plate in a huge nicely formed mound that was bigger than a softball. Then they added some homemade french fries to the side. Then one of them took some slices of cheese and placed them over the rice. At this point it all looked very interesting and carb-tastic. I guess they really tied the meal together with a little tomato sauce and
some fried eggs. I´m not really sure. We also had William the Ferret running around the kitchen at one point. William is Stine´s Ferret and Stine is a Dane that lives in Margaret´s block. She is quite the character.
Some random things which I have done...
Walked up the the Rundetaarn (round tower). We got to go about around and around up and up and then got a pretty cool view of the city, which at this point I hadn´t seen much of so it was pretty meaningless, but it was a nice view. It is interesting because they do not have many extremely tall buildings here because they do not like to make people feel small (so I´m told by Margaret, who is an excellent tour guide-always offering tidbits on Danish culture and history).
We also visited Thorvaldsen´s Museum. He was a famous Danish sculptor during the 1800s who made all sorts of sculptures that are in Rome. I guess that makes him seem important! It was cool because we had an audio tour and most of his sculptures were of Roman Gods so it was a little like story time.
While Margaret was in
class I went to the Fine Arts Museum or the Statens Museum for Kunst. I also went to the botanical gardens where I wandered around the terraced paths. It is really nice here, there are a lot of parks and gardens and ponds incorporated throughout the city. Margaret and I went to see the famous statue of the Little Mermaid and in order to get to it we were walking through this strange park trying to get near the water. There were statues and little cannons spread out on the grounds. There was also a striking church, mainly because it was not brick like all of the other churches we have been seeing. We were following a path that was kind of high up with big sloping sides leading to large grassy lawns. We also got to see the opera house and the place where the queen lives.
I went to the National Museet on my own and wandered through their many exhibits. It was funny because I focused on the exhibit of cultures from around the world. It pretty much summed up all my travels; I saw African jewelry and masks, artifacts from South America, and even a
store house which the Maoiri use. I thought about Colleen in the portion dedicated to India. One of the most facinating parts was the museum´s endless collection of Inuit tools and clothing. I was enjoying imagining their lives without modern technology and endless plastic. The other cool thing at the museum was the exhibit on Toys. It was very small but they had a mock street or neighborhood made up of dollhouses. The detail that goes into them is amazing.
Stine, Margaret, a couple of Margaret´s friends, and I went to a flea market on Saturday morning. There were lots of toy guns for sale, toys, Christmas decorations, and dishware. All in all we mostly ended up buying some candy from the large selection. It was mostly the assorted types of chewy-fuity-sour candy, but I managed to get some really good chocolate. There were also endless varieties of black licorice. Apparently they love it here...and it is salty. I feel like I´ve seen that somewhere else but I don´t remember. It reminds me of Sheila except that they aren´t cute like her Scotties, and I can´t remember how she feels about salty licorice-I´m guessing that she wouldn´t like it
but I keep wanting to buy things for people. And then I remember that I have no room.
And then there´s Robert´s Coffee or Steven´s Cave as I was calling it...partially because I confused Robert and Steven and partially because I swapped cafe for cave even though it is coffee.....BUT also based on the fact that it's really dark with lots of candles and has really good coffee--and hugge --Danish for a cosy ambiance.
There are a couple more things to note about this trip to Copenhagen so I will hopefully finish that up before I leave !tomorrow!. Yikes.
