Well I've only been here for like 8 hours but man, craziness. Mad cobblestone streets with wild old buildings. We checked out basically the whole city today with the exception of the castle. We're saving that for tomorrow. Charles Bridge is nuts as well as the museum. We found a good deal on an apartment for a couple of night.s about 15 euro a night. Everything is screwed up with using check money. 28 czechs equals 1 euro. So its tough. Happy to have the appartment for a couple of night to relax and keep of the drinking train. I know were in the beer capital of Europe and its like 2$ for a pint but I gotta keep my game face on for my birthday. We're moving over to a happening hostel in the pub ... read more

Those of you who have followed our travelblog know that we love hiking in the Sarka Valley. Today, a beautiful warm Sunday, we took our last long walk before heading back to our home in Maryland. After lunch we rode the tram to the end of the line. With only two days left, counting today, we said if we were going to make this hike we'd better do it today. Not wanting to totally exhaust ourselves we rode a city bus to the top of the hill and transferred to a tram. After riding the tram to the end of the line, we climbed off and set off on our hike. There is a MacDonald's at the end of the trolley line. How is that for market research, placing a MacDonald’s at the end of a ... read more

With only three days left before heading home we decided to return to Vysehrad where the Peter and Paul Church is located as well as remants of a fortress that was constructed in the tenth century. Also the Vysehrad cemetary where many famous Czechs are buries is located here. As we approached the church I noticed the stone faces on either side of the three doors and decided to snap pictures of them. Some carry a Biblical theme that I could identify. The symbology of others were a mystery to me. ... read more

With only three days left until we go home we decided to visit some of our favorite places. We started with a three mile walk. As we walked, I could not resist taking a few more pictures of buildings. Those of you who follow this blog know that Nancy and I are fascinated by the beautiful buildings in Prague. All these pictures were taken in two blocks while walking along one street. This is the street that inspired me to begin taking pictures of buildings. ... read more

Prague - a very interesting place indeed. The boys and I spent the most time here. 5 nights. We were under the impression that it was very cheap there, but in reality it was basically the same. Our hostel was awful. No street sign outside, and a rickety old elevator that took us to our room on the 5th floor or the bathroom on the 2nd floor. At least we had a bed to sleep on, even though there were no curtains on the window and it became 30 degrees by dawn. We went on some paddle boats up and down the river which was beautiful, saw the Charles Bridge. We visited a night club which is the biggest club in Europe, it had 5 stories, each level had a different type of music. I got ... read more

Dear everyone I know, Go to Prague. Now. No, don't wait. Go. Quickly, before everybody else I just told beats you there. In fact, don't even read this. Just go. Still here? Okay then. Here's the breakdown. I've never felt this way about a city before. Ever. Seriously dude, I think this one's the one. I'm gonna ask her out. I bought flowers and everything. I know I may have left an unsatisfying impression with my description of the airport before, but what I left out of that description is that, in spite of the rocky landing, we were overjoyed to see rain on the tarmac as we touched down. I've never been so happy to see rain (you know, given the horrific heat we'd been marinating in the whole time we were in Rome). The ... read more

So, a few months back, after I'd recieved the booking confirmations from our travel agent, I was sitting and sifting through the paperwork when I came across the info for our two flights around Europe. Now, when you see airlines going by the names Easyjet and Smartwings, it tends to give you pause as you stop to consider the possiblility that maybe these Barnum and Bailey names don't bode too well for your travel experience, but if you're anything like me, you follow your belief that bad things only happen to other people and you move on. Luckily for us, the flight from LA to London let us carry on everything (British Airways; a nice respectable name), and gave us hope that maybe the rest of the flights would be similar. Easyjet (From Paris to Rome) ... read more

Day 8 (june 30) Cesky Kromlov Castle and Baroque Night We arrived in Cesky Kromlov to a drizzly day. Kromlov is another medieval city that we’ve visited. There’s a river that snakes its way though the city where many people take rafts and canoes to float around the castle above. All the cities we’ve visited have cobble stoned streets so its been hard on our feet. Our first night, Amanda and I went out in the pouring rain to find the girls something to eat. I mean pouring. It’s very hilly in the city square so the rain was running like rivers over the cobble stones. Where it was uneven, puddles formed 3-4 inches deep. We had fun just getting wet. We finally found a place to get pizza and took one home. One thing we’ve ... read more

Day 32, 2nd July. Prague - Kolīn - Pardubice - Sezemice At last! We are on the road again, I was going a little crazy staying in one place for so long. I said farewell to Klara and we headed off for our rendezvous at thr Russian Embassy. It was quick and easy to pick up our visas, they were all in order except Scott’s which was just a direct copy of his original one! The staff assured me that it could be extended once we were in Chelyabinsk*. So, we headed off into the centre of town, Scott picked up new pedals from Tesco cos his other ones he bought in Germany were already kaput! We ate pizza slices before setting off and Rowan took some photos of us in Wenceslas Square. Then we headed ... read more

Brno, Czech Republic June 14, 2006 Shannon: Leaving Poland behind, we’ve now crossed into the Czech Republic, where we plan to spend the next two weeks soaking up the European ambiance before scooting into Asia for a change of scenery. As many people have told us, the Czech Republic is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. So perhaps this will be a fitting bookend to our trip: having entered Europe via one of the least-touristed enclaves (Sofia, Bulgaria) we will be departing out of one of the most popular (Prague). It’s interesting to look back over the last few months (by the time we depart it will have been almost 3 months exactly since we landed in Sofia back in March) and to think of all we’ve seen on this leg of the trip. ... read more
