Have no particularly special association. Rather, the title of this blog reflects a change of hotel and the main attraction of the last couple of days. We initially booked three nights in Prague. We liked it here so much, we decided to stay longer. Alas, by the time we had made this decision, there was no future availability at Barcelo Five. So we found a new hotel. The King Charles Hotel was walking distance away, so we picked it. The walk wasn't too confusing, taking us over a rickety rail bridge to our new home for the next 3 nights. The room is excellent; Old English decor, TV, nice shower, comfy bed and air condit... uh oh. Staff advised us that the air conditioning was destroyed by recent floods. They bought up a portable, and it does the job just fine. Our arrival day was casual, relaxing and grabbing dinner at a local restaurant next door. Schnitzel, dumplings and pork stew on the menu. Plus beer of course. I think the last week or 9 days in Prague and Munich I have consumed between 12 and 15L of beer. Its the Bavarian Conundrum. I didn't even want beer today.
The menu comes out; 0.5L of quality beer 26CZK ($1.5AUD), 0.2L Soft Drink is 50CZK ($2.9AUD), 0.2L of fruit juice is 70CZK ($3.8AUD) 0.7L of water is 90CZK ($5AUD). What choice do I have?
Today was Tuesday, and another scorcher, mid to high 30s Celsius. The Prague Zoo was highly acclaimed on tripadvisor so we decided to give it a spin. By tram, train, and bus we got there, stopping on the way to pick up our train tickets to Krakow on Thursday. It was an excellent zoo, one of the best (and cheapest) I have been to. Its huge, with a great variety of animals, some I had not seen before. The enclosures were large, and most species in large groups. Despite the heat, the animals all seemed really relaxed and happy. None more so than the Polar Bears. Two young males, splashing around playfully, wrestling, playing and enjoying a cool bath. Other highlights were the Giraffe, the Elk, the Honey Badger, elephants and Reindeer. The main con was about 1/6 of the zoo being closed due to recent flood damage. That also meant the chair lift connecting exhibits was down and meant a grueling climb to the top.
We still enjoyed this zoo and spent a full day, around 5 hours here.
From the zoo we spent some time wandering Prague old town, looking for particular shows (unsuccessfully) and grabbing a drink. Exhausted we returned to our hotel by tram, and grabbed another meal at our local restaurant. Different this time, goulash with dumplings and a giant potato pancake stuffed with chicken and peppers. No prizes for guessing what I had to drink. Nat is getting to enjoy ciders (still double the cost of beer). Tomorrow is our last full day in Prague. Storms are forecast so we may do some travel planning.
