hi, not much time so this will be quick. we have decided to leave early tomorrow morning instead of staying for the day. Prague has lots of tourists and we are looking forward to seeing the castles in Germany. We will be on the train all day tomorrow. Hopefully we will get a room at a hostel, but we made no reservations so it might be an exciting night tomorrow! We are in Germany for two full days and 3 nights and then it's back to Paris. We will stay with Amy's family most of the time so it'll be nice to save on accomadation. Ok well I'm off to go do some sketches of Prague! Love, Courtney... read more

Prague, what a city! Amazing old buildings everywhere, some history, and it's nice to be in a place where I don't constantly go over my budget, this is a wonderfully inexpensive place to take a trip to. I arrived in Prague at about 2300, not the best time for it, but oh well. The train station in Prague is dodgy as hell, and at that hour I wasn't looking forward to navigating my way to the hostel on my own. Basically you have transients and potential muggers sitting around everywhere....watching you....thinking about targetting you.... So I looked for a fellow backpacker getting off the train, and found one, a big guy called Eric from New York, perfect, and he was a cool guy. We hit up the ATM at the station for some Czech funds since ... read more

Last summer I had the oppurtunity to go to the most beautiful city ever...Prague. It was nothing like what I was expecting it to be!! I was expecting Prague to be mostly farm lands and very rural. It was anything but. My favorite area of Prague was Old Town Square. The square looked so beautiful when it was lit up at night. I visited Prague July 1-4 2004. The day before the 4th of July, there was a huge soccer tournament. The square was filled with people. There were 2 HUGE tv screens set up in the square, so everyone could watch the soccer tournament (I think it was Greece vs. Czech Rep...but i'm not sure). When night came, mobs of people came to stand and watch the tournament. People were rioting, hanging out of windows, ... read more

Today was pretty busy, too, but I'm thinking I may want to go sleep it off rather than write about it all night. ;) We started off with our new favorite tram #8, which zips us from our flat in Florenc right into Náměstí Republiky (Republic Square) and the old town. We started with an unexpectedly large meal ("rich breakfast" on the menu might have been a clue) at the Obecní dům, an Art Nouveau municipal and performance hall with a lovely café in front. The mad tourist rush when we arrived was not to be believed, but even more amazing was the speed at which the place emptied out and got dead quiet again at just about exactly 9:55 AM. All the tour groups must be meeting at that time! We got a bonus: since ... read more

Well, I was just about to extol the virtues of the much nicer internet café we found, but the proprietor announced he's closing momentarily so I've got to run. It's not like I believe any of you people are reading anyway. Where are my comments?! ;) Full Praha update later....... read more

Those of y'all who know me, this is no surprise. But it's interesting, I was reading elsewhere here that some intrepid young traveler has arrived in Prague for a 12-day stay. I just cannot imagine staying in one place for that long! And, of course, with the surprise windfall of two extra days next week, I've every intention of cramming in at least one more city. :) Stay tuned. Yesterday we saw more of Praha (Prague) than I ever imagined possible. We headed off to Pražský Hrad (Prague Castle) with every intention of spending the entire day there. On the way, I thumbed through the Rickster's guide and he says that most of the castle sights are skippable. We were pleased to take his advice, and of the critical five he recommends, we even skipped one ... read more

Well, it is the last day in Prague. After waking up early and being pleasantly surprised to see brilliant blue sky, I headed out for the quickest picture and shopping hunt I could as I needed to be back at the hotel around 11 to pack and check out. Bethany decided we should go our separate ways this morning as we both wanted to get some shots but of different things. It was strange to walk the main streets and have them nearly empty. The shops weren’t open yet and the mass of tourist must have still been in bed. The bulk of the people at the old town square were the people filming the Coca-Cola commercial. It was nearly 9am and there were only a handful of us crazy tourists waiting around for the clock ... read more

Hi everyone- Amy and I did a four hour tour today. Me feet are KILLING me. And I still have twelve days left! Prague is beautiful. We learned a lot about the history of the Czeck Republic and the city. They have only recently been apart of the EU so they have really been renovating and building things up. Almost everywhere we go there is construction being done, which is good, but bad for us because some of our views are not as great. I amy taking TONS of pictures and will hopefully be able to remember what most of them are of. Some of my favorite things to see over here are the many churches and clocks that all the cities have. The astrological clock here in Prague is really cool. I just recently figured ... read more

Well, we're getting by OK not speaking the local language, but there sure is a difference (for an English-speaker) between not speaking German in Germany and not speaking Czech in Czechia. No, I couldn't understand a word of spoken German, but at least I could make some sense of signage and the names of stores. In Czech, nothing looks or sounds familiar (I don't remember enough Russian to get into any kind of Slavic groove), so there's no faking it. Even if the workers in all the shops speak excellent English (as is widely claimed in guidebooks), we'd like to figure out which stores to go into first! The practical upshot of this is that we're sticking to tourist paths, where English signage is more common... at least for tonight. No matter how many times I ... read more

Oh! My feet! I went on a walking tour of the castle today. Pretty much a waste of time. Mr. Gottfried our guide who must have been as old as dirt was bad. His accent was so thick even I couldn't understand him much of the time, let alone the two women for Jersey. The information he was giving was bland and un-interesting and he couldn't understand any of our questions. I was bored. I stayed with it only because it included admission to the inside of the castle which I hadn't seen before and Golden Lane which I wanted to see again. The last time I was at the castle entrance to Golden Lane was free. Ah, how far the Czech have come in capitalizing on the tourists which seem to have overrun the city. ... read more
