So, I have been here for a little over a week now.. And don't get me wrong, this place is beautiful and I love it. But there are some things they missing according to my American standards...
1. Free refills. If you ask your server for a free refill, they will laugh at you as they charge you for another coke. I always wondered why my Russian and Polish friends in the Outerbanks were so crazy about the jumbo cups at Burger King.
2. Free water. Ask for water, they will bring you a bottle of it. Tell them you want tap water, they will bring you tap water and charge you for it. Free does not exist in the country. And bottled water is more than beer. So it is more economical drink beer.. Sad..
3. Leashes for dogs. Every day I see what I think is stray dog roaming around freely, but 100 yards behind them is their owner.. Dogs are trained well here.. better than in the US, but there are a few exceptions (the zoo).
4. Convenience stores with over the counter meds. Yeah, don't expect to go to your corner store and
find tylenol for your cold. You have to find a pharmacy.
5. Restaurants that accept debit/credit. Cash only.
6. Fast service at restaurants.. I think i mentioned this before..
7. WALMART.. don't ever take it for granted!
8. Normal Ketchup. The stuff here just tastes like vinager!
9. Cheap MacDonald's. Mcdonalds is about 200 Czech Korunas for a meal.. that is about 10 USD!! And no, there is no such thing as the dollar menu!
10. High Speed Washer/dryers.. I m not sure if it is because of the voltage or the machines themselves, but everywhere I have tried, laundry takes about 3hrs for 1 load.. Its a big ordeal here.. Actually, all laundromats or most are WiFi so that people have something to do while their laundry takes an eternity.
11. Suburbs. We have done a lot of traveling around the Czech. And I noticed that here, you either like in a city or the middle of no where.. Right when you leave Prague, its farmlands! There may be some suburbs, but not like US!
12. Toilet Paper that doesnt feel like sand paper. i'm sure they have normal tp somewhere,
but in restaurants public restrooms, and my dorm, we have something like brown paper towels cut into the shape of toilet paper.
13. Right of way for pedestrians. They WILL run you over.. And if you nonchalantly walk into the road slowly hoping for them to stop, they will beep their horn like youve never heard.
14. Free salt and pepper.. I'd say 50% of restaurants, especially in the touristy parts will charge you for salt, pepper, and their version of ketchup.
15. Free public restrooms. This may just be a Prague thing, but to use the bathroom, you have to either be a customer or pay!
16. large meal portions.. They serve healthier portions I would say. I remember the russians and polish kids in the outer banks saying that they were shocked when they ordered their first meals in the US.. and they ate it in the course of three meals. Maybe it makes up for tall the beer they drink!
17. "Doggy bags" They think it is very strange if you ask to take your food home. They look at you like you are a beggar who doesn't have enough money to pay for their next meal!
Thats all I have observed within a week.. I am sure I will have more to add as I live here longer!
