I suppose this will be my first venture to “Eastern Europe” or I suppose more or less “Central Europe” … either way I was ending east. My first stop after leaving my sisters in Barcelona was Prague. There was a decent amount of confusion on my side but I requested assistance from the girl that was sitting next to me on the plane and she was eager to help, instructing me to get on bus 119 to get into the city. When I arrived in the city I needed to find my hostel, for those who have never been in Prague; the streets are crooked. It took me a good 30 to find it. Naturally it was raining, had no Czech Koruna (Crown), and was tired from ten days with my sisters. A nap was my first priority.
I awoke to the sound of Spanish ish ish… (Mexican, I struggle to understand it), so I began speaking with them, and took a quick walk towards the castle with a Mexican girl. It was cold (remembering I am from Florida), but seeing the Prague Castle (the worlds largest) at night is a must. We crossed over Charles Bridge where we the
touch the plaque of St. John of Nepomuk, a Czech martyr saint who was executed during the reign of Wenceslas IV. The plaque on the statue is supposed to bring good luck and ensure your return to Prague. We’ll see if that pans out. As we walked around the “creepy” castle at night, we heard rustling here and there, but thought nothing of it, until a guard popped out of nowhere to frighten us slightly… cough cough… I mean, I was… startled.
The next morning I woke up refreshed and ready to see Prague. Seeing the castle and Charles Bridge during the day was even better. However I was by myself, so I was in the market for some friends. I made my way from the hostel through old town ,across Charles Bridge, up the 200 steps leading the castle again, making my way towards the castle tour pass. As I entered the castle I found a couple girls from California Yaarit and Mandy, I spent the remainder of my time in Prague with them. We witness the changing of the guards, very odd photography in the gardens, the Old Royal Palace, Basilica of St. George, National Gallery, and
climbed another 287 steps up the watch tower with the bright orange roofs of Prague always looking up at us. We conveniently found three doors that fit us to our exact size near the castle. I also shot a crossbow near the end of the weapons museum, which is not as fun as I thought it would be. It really doesn’t have much power, TV exaggerates this weapon to much… it sucks. Then we ventured over to Petrin Hill, where the “Eiffel tower” stands… or the observation tower. Either way that would be another 300 steps, not to mention the hill it is on top of. However the view from the top is worth the hike. There is an excellent view of the dark Prague Castle sticking out of the orange roofs, along with the Vltava River dividing the city.
After we ate some none typical Czech food we parted ways back to our hostels, only to meet up later at my hostel for some pre-gaming. Old Prague Hostel had a solid drinking room with a lot of younger people drinking heavily. We partook in a Swedish racing drinking game, don’t ask… After stopping at a local bar for
some delicious Pilsner Urquell (the worlds first pilsner), we headed to a four or five story club. After about ten minutes in line we said “nah” and headed back towards the hostels. Without hesitation we purchased a bottle of quality champagne from a hot dog vender for about $1.25 and consumed it during the walk back. The night was kind of a bust, but was still fun and didn’t spend a lot of money, which is great since I over drafted my bank account about a week later. Time for bed, so I walked the ladies back and discovered that their elevator had no door, just a elevator and shaft… It was super safe and they paid more then I did.
I awoke the next morning to all kinds of noise. The source of this ungodly noise was kids from Missouri, which knew many people that I knew, traveling is so random. The night before we planned to grab a paddle boat and hit the river, but Mandy was not feeling so well, so she stayed sleeping. Therefore Yaarit and I grabbed a bite to eat and rented a paddle boat. I paddled, she paddle, and we fed
some geese, it was too much work at the time, but fun. After we grabbed a beer overlooking the river and the large chunks of land in the middle of it. Catching the sunset over the castle is difficult; we failed, but gave it a shot. Next stop, pick up Mandy and eat schnitzel. The schnitzel sucked, but the desert was awesome.
The next morning I said goodbye to my new friends and Prague. Vienna will be my next stop to meet up with my friend from Spain Lindsey.
