We awone reasonably well rested so we had no mystery room mate barge in during the night, so headed down to Mosaic's buffet breakfast. It was pretty decent and included bacon, sausages, scrambled and shakshuka eggs! Only down side was the tiny plates, but we filled our lots regardless. We browsed through the Prague section of my Lonely Planet guide book whilst we ate and made a plan for the day.
We started by walking across the bridge to Petrin Hill, at the bottom there are some morbid statues of people in varying states of decomposition, he Statues are dedicated to everyone who has died or suffered in some way due to communism as part of Pragues past (I'm not too up to scratch on that history, so I took the signs word for it). We then queued for and borded the funicular railway which runs up Petrin Hill after purchasing 24h public transport passes. once at the top, we trekked up the 300 odd stairs of the observation platform which overlooks Prague. It offered some great views of the river, the city and the castle. Once we made our way down the tower we walked around the gardens before
making our way back down on the funicular.
Next we walked across the famous Kurlov Most (Charles Bridge) and took in all the gothic statues looming over us, that is when we weren't pausing so as not to invade other people's pictures. We took some of our own snaps and moved on.
We were getting hungry so we d somheaded on to Old Town and it's famous square the Astronomical clock, sadly the clock and bell tower (the climbing of which is one of the few things I really wanted to redo in Prague as I lost all my pictures from last time) were all covered in scaffolding :-( After a quick glance around the square our stomachs reminded us it was lunch time and we went to the fantastic 'The Bakery' just outside of the square towards the Jewish area. I went for the feta and tomato quiche, which Ping had when we visited and I was forever jealous of, it was amazing. Dan went for blue cheese and walnut quiche AND a sarnie, hungry boy!
After lunch we wandered around Josefov and checked out the synagogues, Jewish cem. etery and some statues in the area.
I was most interested in the slammed VW beetle we passed, parked on the road. We then headed across to a large shopping centre on the outskirts of Old Town walking via the square again and a large Gothic arch by the theatre. We had decided to seek out the Czech equivalent of Boots, which we found to be DM, in order to buy shoe spray, face wipes, toothpaste and a body 'polisher' as, despite our best efforts, walking ~10k a day in the sun and living out of a bag is starting to take its toll on our personal hygiene (especially our feet!!)
We caught the tram back to the hostel and chilled out for a while, I posted some blogs, clipped my nails, had a much needed shave, showered, put on some fresh clothes and felt like a new man! We headed out for dinner and caught the tram back across to Josefov to try out a highly recommended Czech beer hall called 'Lokal', it was pretty busy and we were rather rudly told by the waitress that "its very busy and, if you don't have a reservation, I don't know how long you will need to
wait for a table". We took that hint, and looked around elsewhere before finding another Czech place with its own microbrewer. Unfortunately we were sat in the quiet downstairs section as upstairs was too busy, but other than that it was spot on. I had a couple of their own beers alongside a chilli goulash with potato pancakes. I think it was in the top 3 dishes I have had since we started our travels.
Glasses drained, we headed back to the hostel via Old Town and Kurlov Most for some night time pictures, Dan got an ice cream. Back at our room we bumped into our room mates for the night, Evan and Jared from the US, who had just arrived a few mins before us. After a brief chat, they headed out for dinner and I FaceTimed Ping. They were hen heading out for some drinks but Dan and I opted for more sleep. Thankfully they were pretty conciderated when they stumbled in durin the early hours.
