Central Park, Zagreb. Maybe not the same aura as Central Park, New York but it’s quite lovely here. We’ve had the leisurely stroll around and are just having a break prior to picking up our bags, taking a short tram trip to the local bus station and hopefully getting our GoOpti ride to Bled. Yes we had breakfast plus so we are prepared, packed and ready to picnic. Walked through delightful fruit and veg market. Full of very local produce from very small farms, some selling just a few eggs, beans and some form of pickled marrow. But the colours of some of the produce is delightful, water melons have a deep red colour here and the tomatoes (of various breeds) look quite enticing. Even though other shops are just opening there’s numerous examples of snaps ... read more

Tricked you. It’s not hiking boots and poles (for Julie) yet but track shoes and sunscreen as we walk, boat and car/train around and over the Plitvice Lakes. But first, we found some pretty good ice-cream, not the best but pretty good. And that was after stumbling across an outdoor concert commemorating the Romani genocide. Yes I know that sounds as welcome as a pig at a Jewish picnic but it was surprisingly good. Probably 20 orchestral members (percussionist, harpist, violist…) and 4 excellent vocalists belted out some great sounds. Very gypsy/Spanish feel but fun. Now it’s today and breakfast and the customary raid on the rolls, roast beef, salami and cheese platters. Always enjoy breakfast then we were off round the corner to meet our transport for the day. It’s just over 2 hours travel ... read more

It’s the p.m. part of the post. Back to the upper town details of which were cleverly hidden on the back of the lower town map (who would have thunk to turn it over - don’t answer that I’m still getting over the flights here). Julie just read my blog. Big mistake for me as she’s busy correcting my spelling, grammar and details. She is upset by the fact that my Museum of Modern Art is really the Academy of Music. Pedantic as it may seem, it just means read ‘Museum of Modern Art’ as ‘Academy of Music’ except when it is really the Museum of Modern Art. The colourful one is the Academy of Music (go figure), the boring colour one is the Museum of Modern Art (go figure). Up the World’s shortest funicular railway ... read more

Here we go. Second leg and almost 5 hours gone and probably a little more than an hour to go. The ‘function of the information system’ is not (according to the cabin announcement) so I’m estimating but confident. So after boasting of Emirates entertainment and their range and quality of movies here I am with no flight information, no BBC news service and no movies. Additionally there’s no power for devices so use of the iPad has even been curtailed. That means only a couple of sudoku! Significantly smaller plane flying under the Dubai Airline livery rather than Emirates and in fact it’s an older 737, you remember them once upon a time they were state of the art but… Missed out on window seats this time so even the views have been cut. Most of ... read more

Clutch motorbike tours of Craotia, and the six other countries which made up the old Yugoslavia, have planned a comprehensive motorbike tour of this beautiful region. Detailed planning is evident....Rozle, our Croation tour leader, along with Gordon, a Serbian rock-star, (apparently!), and Hector, a Spanish nurse, who is on vacation, are to be our guides and minders for the next 20 days. They are young, enthusiastic motor-bike lovers, with great senses of humour. We are in for a lot of laughs! We are joining two American couples, BMW motorbike enthusiasts, on the road. They have travelled way more extensively than the 'green' Kiwis, but we have a good feeling about them..... In order to give Shane a hand with keeping right, Rozle tied a very bright flouro cloth onto the right hand side of the handle-bars. ... read more

SENJ Hidden Treasure - Croatia Adriatic Coast We passed through Senj a few months ago when we were heading south. Now on our return toward Italy and France its convenient for us to cover a short bit of our track a second time. The drive down to the coast from Plitvicka Jezera took us across some interesting farming land and then down a very steep range. I thought the farming land was interesting because it varied from the broad acres of grain growing land in Croatia’s interior- on the drive toward Senj the high mountain country is undulating to hilly with lots of dense pine forest interspersed amongst windswept plateaux with mixed crops, orchards and small herds of cattle, flocks of sheep and every kind of fowl known including guinea fowl, geese, ducks etc. Then there ... read more
