The Eternal Derby of Serbia phase over ............... for the time being.......... we find ourselves on the Croatia Airlines flight to Split via Zagreb for the 2ndinstalment of Eternal Derby of Croatia phase. The Man in the Middle was absent, but the other half had been convinced by a few creative photographs of the Poljud with some blue skies and sunshine in the background. I skipped over a few random disputes on the side of a Croatian motorway and left her with the fantasy idea of carnival football in the sun. We just didn’t need a repeat of the last meeting, where Hajduk refused to play and left a stadium of Dinamo fans to watch the grass grow. A father and son in the row in front maintained their sullen look on the flight to Zagreb ... read more

What did I know about Croatia, the country, the landscape, the people before we went there? - Not much, probably a very little bit about history but still not much. Probably a bit about the landscape: A friend showed his photos to us, he has traveled to Croatia several times. And the people? Time to explore some more, even if time is limited. It was quite interesting to meet three types of people, the young shuttle bus driver (who was looking for a job), the middle-aged landlord (who converted to Christianity, because he was disappointed with and not amused by the communist government in the past) and the old man (who was a Titu supporter). Three views of Croatia now and then, which gave us a very small insight into the Croatian soul... Our holiday home ... read more

... read more

Thursday August 1 – This morning we made some eggs for breakfast and then took the boat to Trogir, a city with a medieval old town. The boat ride took an hour, and I enjoyed seeing the shore from a boat for a change. We arrived around lunch time, so we picked one of the many restaurants that all look exactly the same lining the water and ordered pizza. It was quite salty actually. Not the best I’ve had here. We spent some time walking around the old town, including a long stop at the cathedral. It was built in the 13th century, which of course, still blows my mind. It had beautiful carvings and chapels. It also had a small treasury and a bell tower which was great to climb for the views. When we ... read more

What a day- Suzy started off parked up in Camping Rozac in Trogir . The plan was to walk into town, look around, come back and chill out for the rest of the day. However, all plans tend to go wrong or get changed depending on the weather or on the night sleep that we have had. Iguess that is one of the beauties of motorhoming - if you like it you stay, if you hate it you move on. Well last nights sleep was not brilliant. Noise travels fast on dark nights and there was a gathering of the Dutch camping club in the statics near to Suzy. Also the local disco set up and music wafted over from somewhere until the early hours of the morning. After breakfast and a shower we headed off ... read more

Before we left our camping spot for the night I tried the swimming pool complex and very nice it was too. Loads of children and not many serious swimmers. I hate to think what it will be like at the height of the season but I managed guessing 20 lengths by counting in my head. . Our neighbours the Roma Homers are staying another day but our other Brit neighbours who are young and are travelling in a panel van have moved on. Oh to be young again and have a whole load of years to travel. Suzy got itchy feet and we packed up and went to pay. 288.84 kuna for two nights stay at ACSI rate. As we hit the road we managed to get 28.2 mpg another first as Suzys diesel consumption got ... read more

Today was another packing up day in preparation for our drive to Trogir, a small town near Split. The car has been rested for the past few days and is ready for some more action. This time we will take the scenic route along the Adriatic coastline with its many twists and turns. But first our final breakfast at this hotel. We sit and wonder what it must be like to some imaginary being looking down on this enormous dining room and seeing hundreds of people scurrying from table to self service areas and back to table. We think it must resemble an army of ants out foraging for food. While we pack the car the people we had seen at breakfast were now scurrying to the seashore to reclaim their favourite spot and enjoy a ... read more

Our final sail back to Trogir was a broad reach with 22 knots of wind and my novice crew were all cheering as Ariola reached a peak of 9 knots. Our crew have now departed, but we have arranged to stay on the water for another two weeks. Ecker Yachting provides a one-way charter option and we learned that a Dubrovnik-based yacht was due to arrive in Trogir on Tuesday. We offered to return it to Dubrovnik via Montenegro, so we can explore its coastal treasures, so here we sit in Trogir waiting for a Bavaria 37 to arrive. Frances and I have both suffered bad colds and coughs so a few days lazing around doing nothing will be days well wasted.... read more

Tuesday, 22 June 2010 Km so far: 2680 Still intermittently wet and Trogir has the feel of an English seaside resort, with the optimism of being on holiday and the reality if it being a bit cold and wet. Drove into Split for the morning which was a mistake; we could have gone by boat or bus and it is the sort of city where driving is difficult, congested narrow streets, very little in the way of useful signposting and scarce parking. More by good luck than good management we found a car park that was within a few minutes walk of Diocletian’s Palace, our main objective. It is a fascinating and mixed up place, a sort of ancient semi-ruined area of temples and palaces, some Roman remains, others medieval and renaissance, all with a general ... read more

And getting caught in the rain... After Dubrovnik we thought it was time to head to one of the sunniest places on earth. Hvar Island. It reportedly receives over 2700 hours of sunshine each year. We were not dissapointed. Hvar is beautiful, and if you ever go to Croatia it cannot be missed. After a rainy and long bus ride the ferry dropped us soggy travellers off on the Island. Having not arranged accomodations in advance we decided to see what we could get right from the ferry. In Croatia there are always people meeting the buses and ferries offering apartment style accomodations (it is very common and often quite economical). We ended up at a place called Villa Marija. It was wonderful. A great alternative to a hostel. We met a lot of great people ... read more
