Last night as we wandered along the waterfront in Zadar, we checked out the Boat Excursions on offer for tomorrow. Kim had set her heart on a boat excursion from Zadar back in Australia prior to leaving on our holiday. We settled on Kornati Island Excursions run by an old sea salt named Ivo. When we asked him about the weather tomorrow and whether it would be suitable for a boat excursion, he expressed some doubt, and said he would make a decision in the morning. He provided his phone number and said to phone him early in the morning. We set the alarm for 6.45am, and on waking, tentatively looked out the apartment window to find a relatively clear sky. We phoned Ivo and he said the boat excursion was on for today, and could ... read more

Trogir is a charming little town within easy reach of Split, and another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set on its own island connected to the mainland by bridges and with a mix of Renaissance, baroque and Romanesque buildings it is well worth a visit, although it is so small that even half a day would be enough.... read more

Sunday morning in Trogir is a noisy affair. We disembarked from Zoe on Saturday and relocated to a top-floor apartment in the heart of the old town of Trogir surrounded be at least 4 churches, a cathedral, and a monesrary. The bell towers were competing to attract customers starting at 5:30 repeating the call All day. We finally went down for breakfast at 10. Yesterday we celebrated Canada's 150th birthday with a slice of cake for breakfast sitting at a skinny table in an alleyway between buildings that were built in the 15th century. The uneven cobble stones, we were told, were original. We spent the afternoon today walking through the roman ruins of Salona, founded over 2000 years ago, that became the capital of the Roman Province of Dalmatia. It put Canada's birthday into perspective. ... read more

We overlooked one thing when choosing a place for R+R after our Balkan bus tour. Tours are draining so we knew we needed a couple of days where we could get up when we wanted, eat when we wanted and generally laze round somewhere beautiful to re-charge the batteries. Trogir, a tiny island supporting a picturesque medieval town and connected to the Dalmatian coast by an equally tiny bridge, seemed like the ideal choice. But what do picturesque medieval towns have in abundance? Churches. And what do European churches still do that antipodean ones don’t?...ring their @#$%ing bells from 7am in the morning for about an hour. The sound of church bells echoing over a wooded valley is one of the most lovely sounds, but when the bells are right above you, rebounding off thick stone ... read more

Geo: 43.5186, 16.2505Trogir is a tiny island just along the coast near Split in Croatia. It is a World Heritage site and is full of narrow streets with lots of bars and restaurants and old houses, so a pleasure to meander round. Despite being tiny it has 9 churches and a beautiful cathedral with a magnificent travertine and granite entrance portal with very cute carvings from old and new testament but also weird animals carved using the stone masons imagination. Our guide was a very amusing Croatian guy who pointed out small details on buildings which we would have otherwise missed. At one point we sat in a little loggia which used to be a courthouse and were treated to some Dalmatian singers. Felt guilty about not buying their CD but knew we would never listen ... read more

We got up early for a coffee by the water and a visit to the market. We also went for a wander before the crowds arrived. Trogir is a strange little place. Last night we sat drinking cocktails in the ancient square with dance music going and people dancing by the church. It's a tiny, pocket-size town with a completely toy town feel. Very pretty and well preserved, just all a bit fake. The main quayside is littered with multi-million pound yachts and party boats. To get away from the crowds we crossed the bridge to Ciovo Island, to the beach and whiled a few hours away eating lunch and people watching. While snorkelling I saw Blennies (too cute), clams, anenomes and a whole group of fish snacking on a corn on the cob. Random, but ... read more

Got up and Simon opened his pressies from the folks back home. After a heartfelt goodbye from the lovely Irena, complete with a bottle of plum grappe, we headed off in the general direction of the coastal road. The route took us up into the mountains and we came across a hamlet (Bunic) that appeared to be completely deserted. None of the buildings had any glass in the windows, the church had no roof and there wasn't a single sign of life. I hopped out of the car, trusty Nikon in hand and prepared to take some shots of the somewhat beautifully decaying architecture. No sooner had I put my finger on the button than a pack of baying wolves came running round the corner. Okay, okay. I confess, it was actually pack of rather moth-eaten ... read more

On our last day we wanted to visit another "new" place in Croatia. Well, new for us. After 3 days in Split and 1 day on Solta we were eager to see some more of the country. We decided to go to Trogir. Somehow, enjoying the closeness to the sea we did not feel like taking a public bus to reach Trogir. This is possible and cheap. But there are also boats sailing there. These are small public ferries, also cheap. That was the way to go for us! Tiredly we made our way in the early morning (there are not many ferries sailing per day - so we had to get up early) to the Riva in Split where we got on the boat. We made ourselves comfortable on the top deck. The sun was ... read more

20 April 2015 Monday. Another beautiful day without a cloud in the sky. Mike and I left Split for our first stop, Trogir, which was just a half hour north along the Dalmatian coastline. Trogir, one of many jewels along the Dalmatian coast...which town isn’t?...is situated on an island about 100 feet off the coast; easily connected to the mainland by a bridge. The Greeks were the first to settle here in the third century BC, naming the town Tragyrion, after the local goats. The Romans arrived in 48 BC. The town was under the protection of the Byzantine Empire during the Middle Ages, until the Saracens attacked in 1123 and burned it to the ground. The population eventually returned and rebuilt the town; and did a pretty good job because in 1997 the city achieved ... read more
