Recalling old holiday memories in a dark, rainny day of January make me very nostalgic and these feelings fly me back to an incredibly hot summer week of August that we spent in the pearl of Adriatic sea - Hvar island. Let me tell you the story of those fantastic days that we will remember forever. Not just because of the marriage proposal, the island was filled with special magic and atmosphere that we can't escape anymore (but we don't want to actually).
From the beginnings - 8 months before our holiday we started the planning, which was not too easy to organise. We were sure that we want to visit Croatia, only one thing was uncertain - where to go exactly? I couldn't count the endless hours that I spent in front of the computer and I just checked the holiday destinations - collecting all information and data in terms of accomodations, sights, places and accessibilities. Finally our choice was Hvar island, that belongs to a group of Middle Dalmatian Islands and considered to be the sunniest island in the Adriatic sea. It has fabulous bays, rocky beaches and magical small towns and villages. It is easy to get
to the island from Split (there is direct bus connection from Budapest to Split) and from there you can change to the ferry. By ferry you can travel to Stari Grad - the most beautiful town in Hvar- we booked our apartment in that town.
It happened in the summer of 2013 and we spent 7 days in Hvar island. The weather was wonderful, everyday we swam a lot and enjoyed the beaches - everyday we tried new ones. Stari Grad (pharos) is the oldest town of Croatia. Actually Stari Grad means old town in english - you can feel like you travelled back in time - If you walk through the Stari Grad center, narrow streets and small squares with old fashioned stone houses and churches bring the wisperings of the past times. The town is surrounded with pine tree forest and you can enjoy the fantastic view to the sea from it - great feeling to lay a blanket down and cooled ourselves with summer braze especially in hot summer days. And most importantly the air is fulled of the scent of levander because Hvar is known for its levander, you can see its blooming in summer.
(unfortunately we missed it.)
We spent our time mostly with walking in hand in hand, trying great local foods and wines (Hvar is proud of its wine production). We loved when we were wandering around the downtown and in the narrow streets the houses kept their doors and windows open and we could have a look at the life of local people - I never forget when a big family just had dinner in an old fashioned traditional kitchen - I was amazed how friendly and kind all the local people are and the mediterranian atmosphere was magical. We almost always got lost in the labirinth of city centre - but finally always find an interesting place - it is worth trying more and more dishes - especially fishes. There is a market in the middle of the bay , you can admire the magnificant landscape there and take deep breath - the flavour of levander will fly you away.
There are many beaches in Stari Grad, it is recommended to try all. Never forget to put on your slippers when you go into the see- you can buy there also special ones - we didn't do it
so our legs were injured (not so serious don't worry). If I want to be honest I must confess that Zoli was "attacked" in the water and he collected many many sea urchen stings - that we had to treat urgently. (Vinegar is a great medicine 😊). I didn't survive it without wounds - I got a jellyfish pinch. But we didn't take care of it, enjoyed the summer sun and sea.
We took a trip to the city of Hvar and Jelsa. As we came to the island by ferry, we chose the bus both cases. These cities are very close to Stari Grad, and on our ways to the cities we were amazed by the view through the small hidden villages and enjoyed the great panorama around us. Hvar is a bustling city with many tourists. We walked up to the Castle of Hvar where we could see the small islands in front of the city. (Pakleni islands) The city itself is great, the people boats to the small islands If they want to have good beaches. There are many bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and nudists (like in Stari Grad). It was great but If you want
to be in a quiet place you won't enjoy it so much. From this point of view Stari Grad is better. Apart from the city of Hvar we visited Jelsa - a great town. It has beautiful beaches, huge rocks and forests - in the city centre you can walk in a friendly park. There are small churches, quiet streets with small restaurants - so it has similar atmosphere than Stari Grad.
And the first night my boyfriend proposed to me. I will never forget the moment, we were standing on a cliff and watching the sea when the sun going down far away... since then we got married and the end of this month we are celebrating our 10 years anniversary of the beginning of our relationship. This moment was unforgettable in one of the most beautiful island in the world - I am very grateful and happy that I was the part of it even if for just a week.
