We are in Split now, took the 8 hour night train and arrived here early in the morning at 7am. Apparently there is a very big christian festival here so hoards of people are in Split celebrating the festival. Tomorow we will be heading for Trogir, and the day after, we will be leaving SPlit for Korcula Island, and then to Dubrovnik, our last stop in Croatia. We have plans to visit Mostar (herzegovnia) on a day-trip from Dubrovnik if the visa fee is not exorbitant.....heard that is a beautiful but war-torn place.... read more

After Slovenia we headed to Croatia; Zabreb, Split and then Dubrovnik. Only stayed in Zagreb one day, took the night train there, and then another night train to Split. Zagreb was nothing to write home about. Split was beautiful and on the ocean, which was nice to see after being in a landlocked country for so long. Lots of history, ancient ruins and stuff like that. People seemed to be over it, not too happy to see foreigners there, which is strange because Split is a pretty major tourist spot, and they were more than happy to take my money. But the scowl to smile ratio was still much better than prague. Took a ferry from Split to Dubrovnik, Mike got off the ferry at the first stop to get back to Split where he was ... read more

I was sorely dissapointed, waking up to drizzling rain and overcast skies as the train arrived in Split. But my patience was rewarded as two days later the sun came over the crystal turquoise waters of the Adriatic, which I was quick to advantage of. As it was originally a Roman settlement, Split has an amazing old town, which I spent much of my time wandering and half-intentionally getting lost in its narrow marble alleyways. Hvar Island, which gets more hours of sunshine a year than any other spot in Croatia is a big party island in the summer, but a bit dead this time of year. But a nice place to hang out and relax in the sun. I hung out with a nice young Israeli couple I met, Uri and Tamar, that insisted on ... read more

I'll start by explaining the title of this entry. So far whenever we ask for directions we get the response "200 meters that way" I swear everything in Croatia is 200 meters away. It has become such a frequent response that I can't help but laugh everytime I hear that response. We began our time in Croatia in the north along the coast in a little town called Opatija (O-Pat- Ya). This was a really nice introduction to Croatia. You forget how much you love the ocean when you are away from it for a while. We took a swim in the ocean and noticed that there were all these fish floating on the top of the water. They weren't dead they were just getting some oxygen. One of the croatian guys told us that ... read more

So I just returned from Kasjuni beach. Awesome place. Hiked up through the hills, stopped at a firestation and asked two guys there who seemed to be checking out some porn for directions. Then went down this rather trecherous path and stumbled upon this tiny little yellow church with a ton of candles lit in it and a small bell on top. Eventually found my way down this path constantly jumping from rock to rock in order to evade any landmines left over from the war. Got down, beautiful bay. Plonked myself down on the beach to only be surrounded within five minutes by three scantily clad elderly Croatian men with rather alarmingly large packages(hey i was not looking but when these guys wear their lolly pouches you have no choice) Went for a dip, lay ... read more

Dobry dan! I am in Croatia at the moment. I've been here for a little over a week and have nothing but good things to say about this country. Adam and I have this fantastic apartment on the 6th floor of this ancient building. It's in the heart of Diocletan(roman emperor in AD 235) palace. It's a quirky little place with horse shoes, old family pics, wooden roses and bhuddas hanging from the walls. The best things about it is that it has this awesome little balcony which we cook on and if you climb on top of the roof you can sit there and enjoy a beer whilst looking over the whole town with church bells seemingly always ringing. We arrived from Zadar two days ago, the three hour drive down the coast was superb. ... read more

Hello all, We we´ve arrived in Croatia about an hour ago, and have time to kill between Zagreb and our connecting train to Split. Well since the lst blog we´ve been very busy...had a couple of nights in Rome, meet up with a cool couple from Canada, who guided us to the hostel based 5 minutes away from the Vatacan city. We spend two nights there, did St Peterś and collaseum in one day. The weathers not been great so just taken the option to just keep moving. I will fill the rest of the details in later, but heres a quick run down of the other places in Italy we´ve visited; Pisa - Just spent an hour or two there, did the sights and left. Florence - Spent todays there in maybe the best hostel ... read more

Okay so I made it to Split and the weather wasnt all that great. Instantly attacked by little old ladies and signs with rooms available. Found one that looked decent and followed her around town until we got to her house where I instanly crashed out for a couple of hours. Wasnt that impressed with Split the "beaches" were okay, the water was warm but it was really hard to find one with sand, it was mostly just rocks and concrete slabs to lay on, I guess that i was under the assumption that there were sandy beaches in croatia. So after two days of rain decided to call it quits on split and head to an island off the coast called Hvar. Rode on my first ferry and was really excited about it, the enthusiasm ... read more

I feel I owe Split to write a few words. I had really been looking forward to staying here and I had heard that there where good options for a cheap room in private accomondation. I am amazed by the beauty of Croatia's next largest city. It surely deserves to be on the UNESCO-list. The inner city with Diocletian's Palace is remarkable. But still I feel sad about being here. Some might have to do with the fact that most of the inner city is being renovated. You can't even view the golden gate and the palace is also covered with wood and plastic. But it also and maybe even more relate to all the poor people you meet. Only few are begging for money and for the blind eye it can therefor seem as a ... read more
