Today I am asking you to think back to your childhood and holidays or even to taking your own children on holiday. What is your lasting memory of those trips? Perhaps not the destination or even arriving but the words "Have we got there yet?" or "Have we been here before?". They seemed to be the only words spoken on a journey. It starts as soon as you leave home and continues mile after mile. In motorhoming there is not always an end destination. Just a few dots on a map, a few points of interest that you join together on the holiday. Eventually you get back to where you started and have come round full circle.
We had a vague end point but didn't quite get there. The poor weather just spoiled it for us. We have never had it so poor before. We have had rain but not nearly every day nor in Biblical proportions. We have had hail stones the size of golf balls and temperatures so low that the rain turned to snow and made us muse that Winter is coming. We didn't quite get to the "we have arrived " point . Instead we turned
tail and set off back in the direction we had come. The plan to get out of Croatia and the poor weather as quickly as possible. A long country it takes time to travel from south to the north. We consulted the maps and picked another dot on the map around the Krka national park. We have been before , visited the park and nearby Sibernik. We needed a night stop. It didn't need to be near anywhere so where in the world did Gabby end up?
Camping Marina was where we ended up. A place to regroup and plan our next move. Hopefully the weather will improve. We remember Skradin . The place is nicer than its name suggests. It sits on the one of the lakes in the park. We pass the bullet pocked war memorial. Yes we remember that from last time. We remember Camping Marina or at least we think we do/ "We did stay here - didn't we?" Marina meets us. She smiles and waves like an old friend. She guides us into the pitch . It is smaller than we remember . She chats. Easily switching between German, English and Croatian. We are
on an ACSI site and it seems busier than last time. They are organising trips to the park now we notice. We walk to the toilets block. It looks different . We look for our parking spot and realise that last time we parked near the fence close to the fields. More and more we feel at odds with our memories. There is a new restaurant. Much less rustic than last time we camped here. A new swimming pool too. At night we eat at the restaurant . Veal with vegetables and potatoes. I never eat veal at home so this was a novelty . The Croatians and Italians eat much more veal than we do at home. The wine was good too. The Croatians produce some quality white wines. We slept well with only the plan for tomorrow to keep heading northwards .
The next morning we woke , packed up and Marina waved us off. The penny dropped - we had never stayed here before . Last time we camped next door at Camping Krka .
