Day 61-68 Sailing in Croatia
When we first decided to embark on this big trip, being keen sailors, the intention was to sail the coast from the Balearic islands to Cyprus. Our expectations gradually diminished until it looked like a quick sail from Venice to the Greek islands though still a significant challenge on its own. When we bought the Bongo we realised there is so much to see and do on the land we’d go across country and mix it with some sailing.
Booking the boat only three days before we set sail, on arriving at Kremik Marina, we were assigned our boat the 32 ft yacht ‘Escargot’, that’s it I thought it’s the slowest boat in the fleet -On the contrary it went like a dream. Instead of just hiring the boat we decided on a Flotilla sailing. Having been just the two of us on the road, thought it would be fun meet with other people on their boats. It was the right decision. Sunsail the hirers organise the moorings, some meals, a punch party, and a prizegiving. There were crews from Scotland , Holland, France and Israel.
The sailing was fantastic, strong but not too heavy
winds (fortunately most of the time in the right direction) driving us from port to port.
One day one of the crews suggested us all creating a cocktail from whatever was on board, we didn’t win but it was fun tasting the results of the other boats.
One of the days was free sailing day where we go and pick our own moorings with one of the organisers advice we went to a quiet bay where the adjacent restaurant has mooring provided you have a meal there, for a few Kuna more they will drop you in town for a few hours.
The town was Hvar Town, on Hvar island, one of the most beautiful and liveliest towns in Croatia, with Venetian Castle and expensive yachts in the Harbour.
Back to the restaurant and the most helpful waiter came out with the house recommendations I would have been happy with a menu, but he came out with four enormous dead fish on a platter. I’m glad we didn’t order meat! One was Sea Bass, one was a John Dory, probably one of the ugliest fish in the sea, the others I cant remember the name, except that if the red

Note our boat in the bay and our neighbours one is not cleaned and prepared properly it’ll poison you. We plumped for the John Dory, I’m not a fish lover usually, preferring a bit of batter on it with some soggy chips, but the taste and particularly the texture was amazing. Added to this we overlooked the bay with our boat, and the massive luxury yacht that was decorated like a Christmas tree at night. (see photo) The restaurant even dropped us back to the boat.
The following day we had a 20 mile trip where we saw dolphins and some Tuna jumping.
It was a lovely week where we met some lovely people and had a great deal of fun.
