Geo: 42.858, 17.67Guess who I met in my dorm room last night? Zane and Alex, the two good Aussie blokes from Korcula. We shared a bonding moment as we bitched about the obnoxious Aussies in Korcula. Had a fairly decent hostel breakfast and off to the island of Lopud. Didn't bring a camera today so sorry, no pictures! Ferry was run-down but you hardly notice when you sail the beautiful Adriatic sea. It's funny because there's this great relaxing dance song I like by Aquapura ... soothing beat with some nice guitar work. It's always in my head when I see the Adriatic. Way before coming to Croatia, whenever I listened to that song I imagined listening to it while sipping a cocktail and sailing a yacht on the Mediterranean. It's not the Mediterranean, but it's ... read more

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948Had breakfast on the beach. I skipped rocks and just relaxed for awhile; I have lots of time to kill today. Sitting there, all you could hear were the waves, seagulls, and .... a cruise ship's engine. Way to spoil the ambiance! But still, it was great sitting there for awhile. For me Croatia has been what the Cinque Terre should've been. Back to the hostel to pack up my things. I met the obnoxious Aussies that Alex warned me about. First, they woke every one up at 4 AM when they returned from the bar. Then at 9:30 they disturb everybody that is still sleeping by yelling and swearing. Every other word was "fuck". Complete assholes with a complete lack of intelligence. The "ringleader" (I'd use the word mastermind but that would imply ... read more

I made it to the crazy land of Eastern Europe. It's EXACTLY the way its portrayed in Eurotrip. Except that's completely untrue and this place is just about as expensive (many things cost more) as Western Europe. It took me about 20 hours to get to Dubrovnik, Croatia and its beaaaautiful! I took a bus down the Dalmatian coast and it wasn't like anything I've seen before. There were smallish mountains covered in green green pine trees next to the torquise blue clear sea. I always associate that kind of water with white sand beaches and that kind of tree with dark blue lakes or the gray, hostile-looking Pacific ocean. Weird to see it together like that. Walking around Dubrovnik makes me happy. I don't know why. I'm pretty glad that I've finally left Western Europe. ... read more

Geo: 42.858, 17.5123Finally we were able to board the ferry. Our tickets were deck, which meant that we had to find a chair to sleep in or some carpet. We found some carpet. It was cool, so I used my towels as blankets. While we slept we breathed in the fresh air of cigarette and cigar smoke. Got a few hours sleep until everyone got up this morning at 6am and began talking loudly! At about 7 we could see Croatia and 40 minutes later we docked. I said goodbye to Megan and met the guy from the hostel who was picking me up. The hostel is in a great location with an excellent view of the peninsula. It is run by a Croatian family. I was so tired that I had a nap until about ... read more

I had long dreamed of going to Croatia since I saw one of those beautiful bird-eye view photos of the old town by the blue Adriatic sea in travel magazines. So I had made my effort to visit this small country of the former Yugoslavia Republic. I did not know what to expect and I did not do much research of it before leaving the States. Anyway, after a few days in Bergen, I finally managed to leave the wonderful city. I did not do much of any sightseeing in my last day except to go out to the firsh market to get some fresh cooked shrimps and do my own cooking at the hostel kitchen. Then asking the receptionist which would be the shortest way to the airport bus stop to catch the bus to ... read more

OK folks, I apologise in advance for typos etc. It is 10 pm, Jeff is down in the square somewhere listening to music from an outdoor cafe and I am here trying to get a few words down.....so I remember....while drinking red wine out of a coke bottle......ha ha ha and yes I am serious. OK.........Des........the whole of the main walk way here in the old town of Dubrovnik is a Ceroc dancers heaven. The big stone slabs (marble, limestone, not sure what) are so worn with the trillions of tourists that pass through here that the surface is so slippery it is incredible. I am now in my black ceroc dance skirt and flat, boring shoes (so I could walk from our pad to the town without killing my feet) and even in these shoes ... read more

Yesterday we had a wonderful meal at a restaurant in the suburb of Lapad. It was a 20 min walk or so from where we are staying. The Lonely Planet reccommend it and for once they are right. It is called Levanat. You have to walk along a path for a lot longer than the LP map would suggest but it is well worth it. Finally I can honestly say we had a lovely meal, with fantastic silver service in a to die for quiet setting by the bay, and we werent surprised when the bill came. Another thing that I have been doing unconsciously, which I think is hilarious, is saying No Thanks to all the touts in perfect Swedish!! It just comes out. I have been saying, ' Neigh Tack', pronounced Neigh as in ... read more

Thanks for your comments Suzanne. I had read that a lot of the town has been painstakingly repaired and it took them for ever to find tiles the right colour to repair the roofs. I also visited an exhibition one night while in the old town that had lots of photos of the war and also it was a memorial to some of the soliders who fought to save the Old Town from the Serbs. I took over 500 photos so am having trouble deciding what to put on here. But here are a few more that to me are less touristy and more in keeping with the real nature of the town.... read more

Hi all, Yes Suzanne I have definitly noticed the smell of the pines and various other smells that I dont recognise. A few more comments in no order, as much for me to remember my time here. Crazy parking. Along with the crazy driving we have seen some totally bizarre parking, as in parked on an angle across a stop sign at an intersection. And we have seen this more than once. Friendly people. I was out on the street by our apartment trying to figure out what our actual street address was, holding a pen and paper and obviously looking confused. A couple of people stopped and asked me could they help me. Resturant touts. In the old town at lunch time there are people everywhere trying to get you to eat at their resturant. ... read more
