It’s not often in this blog that I’ve actually talked about Jersey, but with the weather changing for the better and the daylight hours getting longer, the opportunities for doing a bit more exploring are ever increasing. Today our trusty cycles (and far less trusty legs) carried us to Mont Orgueil Castle in Gorey. I’ve always liked castles. As a young boy there was never anything more disappointing than being told that we were going to be visiting a real castle, only to find out when we got there that it was nothing but an unnaturally steep slope with a flat patch of land at the top where once (apparently) a fortification had stood. I reckon my parents used the lure of a castle to drag me on many a hill-walk. The vitrified fort in Glen ... read more

How spontaneous should a round the world trip be? I was speaking to a guy at work who believes in flying by the seat of his pants. No bookings, little research, just go and see what the world throws at you. On the other hand another person I know can’t go to Tesco without planning every precise detail from the route to take there to the brand of baked beans they’ll buy. Does no planning make you a free spirit - a real traveller, or does it limit your journey by forcing you into scouring cities for accommodation late at night, queuing at embassies for Visa’s or accepting expensive transport when you could have got a travel card if you’d booked in advance? On the other hand does too much planning turn your journey into a ... read more

It’s 28th June 1940. At German Naval Headquarters a man named Admiral Schuster has been given the task of capturing the Channel Islands from the Brits. He’s already ordered the bombing of St. Helier harbour on Jersey and St. Peter Port harbour on Guernsey. To his surprise the bombers returned from their mission reporting that not a single defensive shot was fired. His battleships are sat only a few miles from the Channel Islands all primed to go capture a small bit of Britain. But, Schuster’s not a happy chappy. He can’t believe that the Brits would just leave the islands undefended. He reckons that the lack of firing from the Brits must mean it’s a trap. He decides to have a Schnapps, go to bed with a few good intelligence reports and see how things ... read more

God defined the differences between men and women in two distinctive ways. Firstly, there is their physical form. By now most of our readers should be of an age where these physical differences should be quite apparent; some dangly bits here a few extra handfuls of clay there… I’d be waffling and probably breaking Travelblog.org rules if I went any further with this… But God has been left flummoxed by man’s (and woman’s) complete lack of satisfaction with the physical form they have been given. Imagine the look on His/Her bearded/silky smooth face when, having settled down for a century infront of the telly, He/She discovers “Gender Re-assignment” on the Discovery Channel. Now to an omnipresent being who’s seen a few things in His/Her time, this still comes as a bit of a shocker. But to ... read more

Up until now you may have noticed that this blog has been a little one sided. It’s been all Bob and no Vik. But, with a little bit of encouragement, I think we might be able to make this blog entry a joint effort… So far we have a title from Vik… …and now she’s fallen asleep. Oh well. I guess its down to me. Sorry folks. The funny thing about writing a blog is that I’m not absolutely sure why I’m doing it. Why do people feel the need to write these things? Having read a number of the other blogs on this site, there seem to be a number of motives and reasons to choose from: The Postman’s Friend: these bloggers are people who just can’t be bothered with postcards and letters home. At what point does an island stop being an island? For me, living in the UK does not make me feel like I’m living on an island despite the fact that we are isolated from the rest of the continent by a few miles of water. But how often do you actually see the sea? In my book, to qualify as living on an island, you have to, at least once in your working day, get even the faintest glimpse of that point where the deep blue meets the horizon. I have resigned myself to the fact that temp work in Jersey means Financial Services. With that in mind I have taken a job at Barclays Bank. The prospect is not exactly thrilling, but I just have to tell myself it’s only for 6 months. If ... read more

It’s a glorious day. The sun is bright in a perfect blue sky. The palm trees rustle softly in a warm northerly breeze. I’ve just moored the yacht and am making my way up the gently sloping cliff path in my white Man-from-Delmonte suit and Panama hat. As I reach the top of the path, the large Tuscan-style white mansion house appears in the perfectly landscaped gardens. To the side of the house, my driver, John Nettles, is standing next to a red sports car reading a copy of the financial times. Beyond him, a family of tan coloured cows open their picnic basket and tuck into a lunch of potatoes and cider. Some £20 notes fall from tree branches and tumble past me in the breeze. If you ask anyone who hasn’t been to Jersey ... read more
