Our few days in Sofia were very interesting, visiting a pro-democracy protest, photographing the anti-Karl Marx signs, and taking tea with the locals.

Our new friend

Walking the down the street of Sofia, we were approached by this young man, who asked if we were from the US. Used to black-market money traders, we acknowledged and kept walking. But, he just wanted to meet Americans. He was very charming and enthusiastic, but the only thing he could communicate with us was, "Reagan! Woo woo!" Being from Berkeley, we felt more like, "Reagan -- wah! wah!" -- but it was nice to feel so welcome to Bulgaria. We joined him and his wife for tea (she was less enthusiastic), but then we had to leave for the traing station. Our new friend joined us and insisted on buying food and drinks for us for the train. We tried to tell him that we were desperate to get rid of our Lev, because we couldn't even change it into Turkish Lira. But he wouldn't allow us to buy anything or take the money. But we got his address, and sent this photograph to him later. I hope he received it.
