July 4th. American Independence Day. Also known as: The Day the Bosnians Couldn't Care Less About or The Day Chris, Dave, Ian, Hana, Nick, and Karis Had the Coolest Server Ever. We went to a Jazz Bar called Monument (apparently in the "posh" area of town. If a 4KM bottle of beer is posh, I'm moving to Sarajevo). Our server not only spoke English, but spoke it well and had been to the States. He taught us new drink names (like a Tom Collins...apparently called a Gimeš here), and we in turn taught him new drinks (a Jägerbomb is apparently very American. I shouldn't be surprised). Today I went on a long day trip from Sarajevo to Mostar, and part of the reason I did was because a friend of mine did this a year or two ago and highly recommended this tour guide and his company. When I arrived in the morning, I was a little disappointed that it was his dad, and not him, who would be leading this tour, especially since his dad is not really an official tour guide, more of a driver. But the real bummer was that the other four people on the tour were a family of four from Australia, with two small kids. Not really the ideal situation for a single traveler. Today was quite a busy day. After landing in Sarajevo around noon local time, we all hopped on a bus and headed to Hotel Sokak, our home for the next two weeks. I'm rooming with Zach, who is a student who took this trip last year and is coming again as an assistant. The rooms are moderate; I was lucky enough to land one that has two twin beds. Several kids on this trip are sharing a king with another (no worries to all you parents...genders are split by room!). Between the 7 hour flight to Munich, the hour layover, the hour and a half flight to Sarajevo, and the half hour bus ride, there was plenty of time for bonding. Ein Highlight jagd bei meiner Reise das andere. Heute morgen bin ich für etea EUR 2,50 mit dem Taxi zum Busbahnhof gefahren. Der faire Taxifahrer war dabei definitiv eine Ausnahme. Wohl weil er vom Hotel geholt wurde. Nebenbemerkung: In Bosnien zahlt man mit KM, das hiess frueher mal Konvertible Mark oder so aehnlich und entspricht auch heute noch in etwa 1 DM. Dann mit dem Bus wieder durch eine wunderschöne Landschaft nach Mostar. Dort bin ich in einem kleinen historischen Hotel, welches auch ein Museum beinhaltet. Nachdem ich mich dort ausgiebig ausgeruht habe, bin ich in die nahegelegene Altstadt. Dort habe ich eine Moschee besucht, die Brücke besichtigt und zu Abend gegessen. Nun bin ich also in Sarajevo, dieser faszinierenden Balkanmetropole mit der bewegten Geschichte und etwas abseits des Mainstream-Tourismus. Die Fahrt hierher verlief dann doch ohne Probleme. Mit dem Bus von Zagreb über mehrere Zwischenstationen hierher. Auf dem Weg durch eine bergige Landschaft mit vielen schönen Schluchten. Minarette gab es auch jede Menge. Die Namen der Städte hat man in den 90ern oft im Fernsehen gehört. Von Überschwemmung war auf dem Weg hierher nichts zu sehen. Ich bin abends hier angekommen, zum Hotel gefahren und habe begleitet mit bosnischem Wein schön gegessen. Nur für die Online-Tagesschau ist das Internet hier etwas langsam. Bilder muss ich noch nachreichen. Ich hoffe, das schaffe ich morgen, weil das ohne PC anscheinend nicht geht.
