18 April 2015 Saturday. The clouds with light rain that moved into Dubrovnik the previous evening had settled over the city with a promise of heavier rain. Rather than giving me a chance to walk the wall, we decided just to head up the coast and then inland to Mostar before ending the day in Split. Driving up the coast from Dubrovnik the weather improved somewhat. We crossed the narrow bridge of land that provides Bosnia-Herzegovina access to the Adriatic Sea, and then turned inland to enter Bosnia proper...more passport stamps going out of Croatia and into Bosnia and then more coming back...altogether crossing the border 10 times on this trip. So on we drove to Mostar. Prior to the breakdown of Yugoslavia beginning in 1991, Bosnia had been a multicultural country, even hosting the Winter ... read more

I didn't know very much about Mostar except that there was a bronze statue of Bruce Lee there. They chose Bruce Lee after failing to agree on any national figure or statesman that the Serbs, Croats and Bosnians who had all fought against each other in the mixed city during its 18-month siege could all be proud of. Soon after the statue was unveiled, it was vandalised because "it was pointing towards a predominantly Croatian area in a fighting stance." It was returned only last year. Other than that, my grandmother told me she had visited the city, but that was back when Tito was president. Things were probably very, very different back then. Sure, the city was nice. The so-called "old bridge" was shiny new, as it had needed a complete reconstruction after being wantonly ... read more

Hello, Mostar! We headed out of Hotel Sokak in Sarajevo at 8:00 this morning, taking a bus southbound. About an hour and a half in, we stopped at Tito's Bunker, which is built into a hillside and designed to withstand at least a 12 KT nuclear blast. Although it starts at ground level, since it's built into a hill it gets as deep as 200 meters at one point. The design was impressive, and can apparently hold up to 300 people for up to 6 months. They still regularly test and check everything, so it's still useable if (hopefully not) need be. After that, we stopped by a restaurant just outside of town where we got roasted lamb from the spit. I don't mean figuratively or lamb shank. I mean that the entire lamb was on ... read more

Today I went on a long day trip from Sarajevo to Mostar, and part of the reason I did was because a friend of mine did this a year or two ago and highly recommended this tour guide and his company. When I arrived in the morning, I was a little disappointed that it was his dad, and not him, who would be leading this tour, especially since his dad is not really an official tour guide, more of a driver. But the real bummer was that the other four people on the tour were a family of four from Australia, with two small kids. Not really the ideal situation for a single traveler. In the end, it could have been better, but it was ok. I did really like the "tour guide" in the end, ... read more

... read more

The hope that it would stop raining during the bus journey from Sarajevo was misplaced. It did cease for a while, but it was only temporary. We had a bit more luck with these bus tickets. After our last experience, we had the benefit of knowing which window would dispense the Mostar domestic tickets. Mostar is in Hercogovina - literally Duke's Land. The scenery was quite stunning as we made our westwards. Sadly, the Bosnian countryside does not offer the opportunity to explore it as fully as you might wish. There are still plenty of suspicious little signs, that indicate you might receive more than you bargain for in the shape of a landmine should you go off the beaten track. The journey took 2 1/2 hours and was once again littered with impromptu stops to ... read more

Set off for the bus station at a perky 7am... so happy to be going down stairs without knowing I have to walk up 10 flights at the end of the night. (Oh Dubrovnik, you're on par with San Francisco...) The bounce in my step quickly disappeared as the strap on my bag snapped clear in half haha. I was like DEAR GOD NO. At least it was the one that I can hug (my duffle), so I did that the rest of the day. I think I'll have to buy a small suitcase in Sarajevo. Oh well. Bus ride to Mostar was beautiful - first hour or so was along the coast - you can never go wrong with that! Seeing all the small coastal villages and the islands down below. Wonderful. I know it’s wonderful to keep in touch and let you know how I am. I love to do it too. But sometimes, just sometimes, it borders on hard work and not much like a holiday. Typing is typing no matter that it’s project related or personal – it takes time and effort and well, sometimes gets in the way of fun. Or rather, sleep. I’d like to sleep just now but here goes… I’ve made it to Mostar and along the way have had some interesting adventures and seen amazing sights. The bike chugs along. She’s a little petulant (it’s not me it’s her!). She doesn’t always listen to what I tell her and she is never, ever quiet. She makes noises when she ought not to and at times disagrees totally with what I ... read more

As soon as we pulled away from the hostel, the Serbian turbo-folk started blaring - repeating a phrase that sounded very much like “a cup of tea!” - from prominently placed speakers and the van started hopping up and down and jigging to the side, tossing the fifteen tour group members around like dice in a jar. There was a look of vague terror in everyone’s eyes. What had we gotten ourselves into? And for TWELVE hours? I had thoughts of tossing myself out the door whenever we started to slow down…. Welcome to the wild ride that is Bata’s tour of Mostar and Herzegovina! When I booked a dorm bed at Hostel Magdas in Mostar, I knew that they ran a popular tour of the surrounding area. There were hints that it was unusual (“Did ... read more
