Friday July 3rd- We took an 8 hour (airconditioned...yes!) bus to Sarajevo, Bosnia from Beograd, Serbia. Tages and I were overwhelmed at how beautiful Bosnia was. We didnt know much about Bosnia and didn't know what to expect because it is not in the one large guide book we decided to bring. I felt like my breath was taken away when seeing Bosnia out of the bus window. The landscape slowly started... Read Full Entry

A Sarajevo Rose is a concrete scar caused by a mortar shell's explosion that was later filled with red resin. Mortar rounds landing on concrete create a unique fragmentation pattern that looks almost floral in arrangement. We saw them in multiple places.

This main library was bombed during the siege. Our tour guide says he remembers the day quite well because millions of pages were flying all around the city and some even landed in their backyard which is quite a ways from the library.

Memory is a Casualty
Im so so glad you got to see the national library/archives and took a picture of it. This was the reason I was going to meet you there. The National Archives was a strategic target during the siege, because the goal was to erase all existing memory of the ethnic minorities in Bosnia. There are some very interesting videos of people scrambling to haul boxes of records out of the archives while the place is being bombed/shot at/torched. Several people were killed attempting to save the records. Thanks!
