1. Brussels 2. Cologne 3.Düsseldorf 4. Prague - The unexpected move to close Christmas markets just as they were about to open was a great surprise. The Czech government announced that markets that had already opened would have to close and the planned opening of the Old Town Square market and others would not take place. Drinking alcohol in public, such as mulled wine has also been banned. Christmas trees and fresh carp can still be sold on the street & markets that stay open all year, such as farmers markets, can remain. So resourceful as the Czech people are a few stalls were open selling a variety of items but sadly the kiosks & stalls of the main Christmas Market in the Old Town Square were all boarded up. Mischa was still able to give ... read more

The Siege of Bastogne was an engagement in December 1944 between American and German forces at the Belgian town of Bastogne as part of the larger Battle of the Bulge and today Finn took us to the Battle of The Bulge Monument. The views of the surrounding countryside, in which some of the fiercest fighting during WWII occurred were widespread and looked even more special with beautiful shades of autumn. The shape of the building is a Star with all 50 States inscribed on it & the Insignia of participating battalions are shown on the walls, representing the 76,890 killed and wounded during December 1944–January 1945 German offensive. Also located within the memorial is a chapel/crypt, with mosaic triptych to represent 3 religions Judaism, Catholicism and Protestantism. There is also a museum which Finn had visited ... read more

The Castle of the Counts owes its existence to the Counts of Flanders. In the ninth century, Count Baldwin II built fortifications at all strategic places in his realm to protect himself from attacks from outside. His son, Arnulf I, continued with this work and built a fortress in Ghent at the confluence of the Rivers Leie and Scheldt on the site of the present Castle of the Counts. As well as being a law court, the Castle of the Counts was also a prison. The semi-underground cells which it housed were damp and draughty and very cold, particularly in winter. The underground dungeons were the most feared, as, of course, was the torture. Although the legal procedure for torture in the early Middle Ages died a quiet death, it was reintroduced at the time of ... read more

Brussels Two visits today in daylight and at night. As beautiful as it is during the day for me at night the city looks even more stunning especially the Grand Place. Brussels is the administrative, commercial, and financial heart of Belgium, and the majority of services and institutions of national importance are based in the city. The city is bilingual, and in all spheres of public life Flemish and French are used side by side. UNESCO Grand Place. The square "illustrates in an exceptional way the evolution and achievements of a highly successful mercantile city of northern Europe at the height of its prosperity". It has been a marketplace since the 12th century and it was increasing lined by houses and market halls, which are still mostly built of wood. The Gothic City Hall was built ... read more

In Celtic times, Ghent was known as “Ganda” meaning confluence or river mouth. The name makes sense as Ghent was located at the confluence of the rivers Lys (Leie) and Scheldt with the River Kale or Dune to the North; right in the corner between the loamy and silty fertile farmland to the west, and the sandy moors and dense forests to the north and east. While in the south-west, a marshy riverine landscape crisscrossed by rivers, ditches, canals, and other waterways was suited to the cultivation of grain, the sandy moors came to offer a favourable pastoral landscape after the reclamation 1000 – 1300. Ghent was powerful, well-organized in its wealthy trade guilds, and virtually independent until 1584. Within its walls was signed the Pacification of Ghent (1576), an attempt to unite the Lowlands provinces ... read more

VERY breezy today and a little damp. To be honest I can cope with the wet much better than the wind. Today we went through Waddington to Bashal Town, round the TT circuit and out to Mitton, up to Micklehurst Farm, round Rabbit Lane to Bashal Eaves and home. (It was more about getting the miles in and staying on the bike!) Out virtual route was leaving Ronse across more rolling hills, spotting horses and farmland. At one stage the road suddenly stopped at a river and there was no bridge but a very small car ferry that was going backwards and forwards across the river with vehicles and passengers. Today we passed out of Belgium and over the border into France. On route we were struggling to find a Bakery, or Supermarket, to buy some ... read more

VERY breezy today but we stayed dry. Today we did a loop of the local villages, Mitton, Whalley, Wiswell, Pendleton, Worston, Downham, Chatburn, West Bradford, Waddington and Bashal Barn. I thought I was going to end up in a field with several strong cross winds! Out virtual route would be leaving Eeklo and heading south through the picturesque city of Gent to Ronse. Across gentle rolling hills and through lots of farmland with huge crop growing fields and lots of wind turbines. Also, past numerous stables with very fine looking horses. Ronse is a tiny textile town. The B&B we stayed in here was typical of many in this area with very narrow winding stairs which are not easy in cycling shoes and carrying panniers. Also, for some reason, we always seem to have a room ... read more
