Absolutely loved it here - even if it is pretty touristy. The streets are cobble and there is a canal running through the centre of town. It was a great day trip. We did a river canal ride. ... read more

When you buy a travel guide for Brussels, it's more than likely that the towns of Ghent, Antwerp, and Bruges will also be highlighted in the same travel guide. This week, I did as the travel guides say and visited each of these cities. As this was technically supposed to be the last week of my internship, and it was the last week for a couple of the other interns, I decided to make the most of my time left in this country and really experience true Belgium this week. Just to quickly explain why last week did not end up being the final week of my internship, after seeing how busy the Mission was during Secretary Clinton's visit I offered to extend my internship an extra week since I knew that President Obama would be ... read more

Well, well, well...after my birthday we moved onto Bruges (You may have noticed Smicy has gotten sick of doing blogs so you'll probably notice a decline in the quality of them, sorryyyy). Bruges is a small, medieval city. It consists of old medieval style buildings, chocolate stores, brewery tours and LOTS AND LOTS OF MUSEUMS...COUNTLESS MUSEUMS...which we only noticed when we were walking around. They have a potato museum, a lamp museum...why? Potatoes I can understand because they freakin' love potatoes and fries but lamps? Hmmmm. We were both getting pretty sniffly and cold filled by this point so we spent most of our time in Bruges resting up and wandering around slowly haha. Bruges is super small though so it didn't require much of our energy. The highlight of Bruges was going to The Chocolate ... read more

On Thursday we took the P&O cargo ship from Dover, England and arrived an hour later in Calais, Paris. We then drove to Bruges in Belgium, which is the best preserved medieval town in Europe. Taking the city bus tour, we explored the many amazing buildings and streets of the old-worldly town. We then made our way to the city center 'markt', where a german-style christmas market was being held. I had a waffle with melted Nutella (o.m.g) and watched the ice-skaters on the outdoor rink. As night fell the town only grew more amazing with christmas lights outlining all the different little buildings and houses. We stayed that night in a hotel in Bruges and the next day visite... read more

Thursday 28th August (Day 3) Paris - Bruges As our time in Paris drew to a close, we still managed to have a relaxing morning before checking out of the hotel and making our way to the train station, where we waited for our train to Bruges, Belgium. We couldn’t find a direct train (well, maybe there is one but it was probably too expensive for us), so we had a train change in Brussels, which is a large station with loads of facilities, so it was really easy. It took several hours to get to Bruges, but we arrived safely and set off on a walk to our hotel. We immediately noticed that the whole town has cobblestone streets and footpaths. There is an inner ring to the town, and all the tourists stay in ... read more

The bad news is that the museums are closed on Mondays, the good news is that everything else was open and humming. Very tired from a full day of walking. More pics than I can load, so here they are...... read more

Hi everyone, from Bruges, Belgium! for any of u who have seen the movie In Bruges, it is exactly as it is portrayed there! It really is a fairy tale place, with cobblestone streets, red roofs and cute medieval-looking houses. In the centre of it all is the Belfort, or belfry, a tall stone tower that chimes every 15 minutes or so. We arrived exhausted after some strange train delays that saw us take a bus from the Netherlands to Antwerp. After a quiet night in, we took advantage of the sunny weather the next day to rent bikes. We attempted to cycle 12km to the North Sea. Unfortunately the map lied... or we are just dumb.... but 25km later TJ realized we were in the Netherlands! Good thing the scenery along the way was beautiful ... read more

Started the morning by getting up at the unholy hour of 6 am (a regular feature of the trip) and going to meet the bus at Cleopatra's Needle. Seeing as I can't actually lift my bag onto my shoulders without assistance I am very, very glad that we got a taxi there. The Needle was suprisingly beautiful at sun rise, backlit by a red sun rising from misty buildings into a pink sky. I didn't want to leave my family at all but after a lot of hugging I got onto the bus and found a seat near to a Kiwi called Frances, a Brit called James and a German called Katja. We got to Bruges mid afternoon and went on a bike tour, which was an extra but very worth it; the highlght was the ... read more

We caught the bus to Bruges, once we arrived it didn't take us long at all to love it. Dale said it looked cool and I thought it was beautiful. It was like we stepped though a time zone and arrived back in medieval times. One of the best things was that they had great beer and chocolate, which in the first few hours there we managed to sample. It was a great place to wonder around - we did sights like the Bell Fort with 366 steps to the top we really worked off all the chocolate we had devoured. The view at the top was great. There wasnt too many people around which was also very nice. One of the days we were there we went to the Choco Story a museum devoted to ... read more
