Ray: Bruges is a shithole. Ken: Bruges is not a shithole. Ray: Bruges is a shithole. Ken: Ray, we only just got off the f**king train! Could we reserve judgement on Bruges until we've seen the f**king place? That's not quite what we were thinking as Eva and I were dismounting our fourth connecting train. Unlike Ray, we made this journey of our own accord, and the lights of the town shining mysteriously though the fog of the evening filled us with excitement and anticipation. Only the rain and the bitter cold wind ruined the first impression, but only slightly - Bruges really does look majestic at night! The main tower is like a lighthouse in a sea of darkness, beckoning us towards its warm glow. And we follow this landmark, knowing that our hostel is ... read more

More snow overnight. Packed up and headed off around 11am. Had to wait for the owner to come back to do his inventory check before getting our 300 euro deposit back. While walking with luggage to the nearby car park, Daniel continued to keep his eye out for money. Just as he picked up a small coin, a local took pity on him and gave him a 2 euro coin. We're not sure if it was a joke or he thought Daniel was a beggar. We certainly weren't dressed as stylishly as the French. When trying to keep warm you tend to get as much on as you can. While having a laugh later and talking about it, I could see Daniel's mind ticking over the new possibilities . After a few wrong turns while trying ... read more

After a decent night's sleep to reorient ourselves to the time zone we are now in, we started the morning with a guided tour of the Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels. Admittedly, guided tour/museum first thing in the morning while still orienting to the time may sound sleepy yet the tour has made me a believer in guided tours! Our guide, an art expert who clearly knows this museum's fine works, steered us through the collection. At one point, she spent about twenty minutes describing a Bosch painting. I could have listened for another hour for the painting itself was complex with political and social themes of its time. In fact, she mentioned that she had briefed Michael Palin for two and a half hours and I'm sure the painting had some influence on Monty ... read more

well this was largely a travel day so not a lot to say (famous last words). Got up at 7.15am to say good bye to A&M before they went off to work - then promptly went back to bed for a while. I had decided to get the virtually hourly train from Luxembourg to Bruxelle at 11.20 so had to repack the bag with washing and stuff - had thrown in 2 lots of minor washes along with other stuff they were doing at the time - ya gotta keep ahead of it on teh road or it really becomes a chore (just done some more as it happens in Brugge). The only place where I can countenacne someone doing it (and me paying for it) is India where at least they only charge 1-1.50$ a ... read more

Hi all Finally got a decent wi fi connection, we've been out in the countryside for a while, now we are back in the city. Well we've had quite a few days since the last blog so here's what we've been upto. We left Amsterdam and drove south to a small but very nice town called Kaatsheuval which is close to the border with Belgium. We chilled out on day one and on day 2 we went to the Efteling theme park (Monday 2nd Aug) for the day, it was a good day, plenty of rides like Alton Towers (but not as many white knuckle rides tho.......booo!), so we queued and went on everything decent before it started raining at 5 pm and as it hammered it down we decided to head back to the site ... read more

After another horrific nights sleep we are in a taxi at 7:30am to head to our first busabout pickup point. Even though i feel extremley tired and liked Paris, im really looking forward to Belgium. The coaches are filled with young travellers (mainly Australians.) Fairly quick journey as I kipped most of it away. Arrived in Bruges about 1pm so dumped our bags and went to explore the city. The only preconception I had of Bruges was that Colin Farrell hated it so i tried to keep and open mind. Bruges is pretty medieval. All of the buildings have pires and look like castles. I found out later that it is all less than authentic, having been built in the 19th century for tourist purposes. But hey ho. In the centre of Bruges there are two ... read more

After two train cancellations on Sunday our backpacks grew heavy. Upon arrival into Brugges things started to look up. This town is GORGEOUS!! we did some exploring on foot and then jumped on a boat to tour the canals in the company of a dry humor comedian/guide. With 17 churches and more bridges than we could count we were blown away by all the 13th century medieval architecture. The oldest bridge was built in the 1200's and the newest in the 1700's...which is warmly refered to as the ugliest bridge in town. Beautiful cobblestone streets are very narrow here making walking and cycling tricky... Not as crazy as Amsterdam though! Carefully maintained ancient gothic buildings and quaint cafes rule the streets here. We came home in time to dress is our neon orange boa's, a Holland ... read more

Bruges is a well preserved town up in Flanders that used to be much more prosperous than it is today and the place gives off that feel quite a good deal. Now it's really just a big tourist destination but as some might put it, the city absorbs it quite well which I agreed with. It kind of reminds of me of Amsterdam Lite (yeh, I am writing this four days late). There are a bunch of small canals that weave through the town with cafes, chocolate and waffle shops and fry stands all over the place. Spent my afternoon there just wandering around with nothing to see in particular yet enjoying everything I saw. I also wanted to make a point of eating all the stuff they say you should eat in Belgium even if ... read more
