Eventually, we found our friends Bert and Nele at Brussels Midi Bus Terminal. Our Eurolines bus driver didn't make it easy. Even when boarding in Paris, he didn't appear particularly helpful, yelling at a English speaking passenger in French who had asked a question. Our bus arrived somewhere in Brussels around 5. There was no announcement whatsoever as to where we were, nor signs to indicate. Most of the passengers climbed off, so we followed suit, assuming we were at Brussels Midi, the main station and where we were to meet our friends. After looking around we determined we were actually at Brussels Nord station. When we returned to the bus, and explained this to the driver, showing our tickets he was completely disinterested. He even ignored us, tending to others mid query. He completely dismissed us, and refused to let us reboard! Great.
Fortunately, we got in contact with Bert and Nele and met them at Midi after catching the metro.
Our friends live on the outskirts of Aalst in a nice double level home. Our arrival, and subsequent day have been relatively low key, mostly spending time on the Internet looking for short term live in jobs. On our first full day, we did embark on an adventure into the centre of Aalst, walking to the bus stop nearby. There on a lengthy wait, we got talking to a nice Albanian guy named Toni. We spent a couple hours in Aalst, a small but pretty city, touring the streets, and visiting the Cathedrals and Town Hall.
We dont know how long we will be in Belgium at this stage, which is probably as unsettling for our hosts as it is us. We have plenty to consider over the coming days.
