Hallo, Katrina was still in town, so we decided to do another day-trip. This time, we headed to Gent. The city is halfway in between Brussels and Brugge and is by-passed by most tourists as a result. We caught a train, which turned out to be of the slow, milk-run variety and took double the amount of time to arrive at the city as was anticipated. Never-the-less, we arrived in the city and walked towards the Old Town. It was a bit of a hike, so we stopped off at a sandwich place en route. The sandwiches were fantastic! I didn’t think they would be because I ordered a club sandwich and it came with “pork spread”. I didn’t know one could spread pork. Apparently, Belgians can. They make it into a pinkish red colour and ... read more

Friday - May 8, 2009 The forecast was in the low 50's, wind and rain - so we thought we would take the train to Gent. Feeling very much like locals, we headed to the bus stop to catch the local bus to the train station. A very nice REAL LOCAL finally stopped and told us that there was a BUS STRIKE today - actually "today and tomorrow"! So we headed back to the house and decided to ride our bikes to the train station! The train to Gent only took about 30 minutes - and then we discovered that the town of Gent was a good 30 minute walk from the train station (No buses running in Gent either). We decided to catch a cab - and had him drop us off at Sint-Baafskathedral, where ... read more

This is my 3rd day of five in Belgium, and so far so good. Today is actually a recovery day, my brother and I were supposed to go to Bruges but we both woke up halfway into the day and very hungover. We are not really fussed, we spent yesterday in Gent which was amazing and the day and night in general is the highlight of our trip so far. Gent is a very pretty city in the central part of town and, more importantly, has a great vibe about it. There were people everywhere, mainly students (there is a university smack bang in the middle of town) and it made for terrific people watching. I was happy, I got to soak up the atmosphere (in the sun!) on the edge of the canal while my ... read more

Hidi, No no, don't think I'm still in Quebec. I returned in October but it took me a bit longer before I managed to write everything down and to translate my little adventure. Enjoy reading and feel free to send me some comments. If you see any language errors, feel free to tell me. Many regards, Ann.... read more

Well, it's official. My internship is half over. I can't even believe it! I feel like I just got here! Though I have two extra weeks in Europe after my internship, I can't believe my time here is going by so quickly. This was another great week in Brussels. Since it was only a 4 day week because of President's Day, the week went by very quickly. On Wednesday a couple of the other interns and myself attended a conference on the Lisbon Treaty at the EU Parliament with 'stagiers' (the cool sounding European word for 'intern') from the EU Commission and the EU Parliament. The Lisbon Treaty is a sort of constitution for the European Union (though they don't like to call it a constitution) that has been proposed and failed twice, but is on ... read more

We left for Ghent after breakfast at 8am. The lady was there talking to herself about something at breakfast. We got on the 9:45 am train to Ghent the same one we had caught the day before to Brugge. It took about 45 minutes and we got off at Dampoort station. From the station we walked through the city centre using the free map for young travellers from www.use-it.info a really good map I found for Antwerp, Brugge and Ghent. So we first of all made our way through Vrijdag market, past St Jacobskerk cathedral. The market was lively and thriving as it usually is on a Saturday or a Sunday (which we were there on). I even saw some Levi's jeans for 15euros! How cheap is that. I had a nostalgic moment for my Levi's ... read more

You would think that, being twenty minutes from the French border, citizens of western Belgium would speak French. But that would be too easy. Belgium splits itself up, linguisticall, by North and South. In southern Belgium, they do indeed speak French. But in northern Belgium, where I was in Gent, they speak Flemish. D'oh. The most interesting part was, after conveying the fact that I don't understand Flemish, people immediately switched to English, instead of French like I expected. It seems to be the second-most spoken language there. Odd, but nice for me. The intent of the trip to Belgium was not for Jackie to be a tourist in yet another country. It was so some Lilliputians (hahaha) could go to a drum-and-bass concert. Europeans have a much different style to their night-life than American youth; ... read more
