This is a statue outside the monastery recently (not sure when) added to show how badly we have messed up our planet. The artist's intent was to show that we've made such a mess of our planet that when the Seven Angels of the Apocalypse (with seven trumpets) descend to earth, they’ll need to wear gas masks to breathe.

In the 19th century numerous stories and legends were invented about the Emperor Charles – also known as Charles V – many of which are depicted at each end of this bridge. One of the sculptures depicts a boat, referring to the story of Charles V as a ‘ship puller’. According to the legend, Charles V stood in the way of a boatswain’s towing path, causing the boat to run aground. The captain forced Charles V to pull the boat away from the shore again. Subsequently, the captain was given a new boat by the ‘ship puller’.

Ghent
Hi Debbie - now don't you wish you were back in Florida (not). Love the old buildings. You should buy a farm there and then invite us all ;-) Please doesn't look so crowded but I bet it is during tourist season.
