Brussels is a quite nice city. Nice buildings, lots of sights, lots of institutions. Some famous monuments and statues scattered over the city for tourists. Grand Place with surrounding buildings is quite impressive. The Pole Star is not very impressive. Our party has decided to visit this Finnish establishment to have a northern drink and sing a song. It's Sunday. The Pole Star is not opened on Sundays. Our Finnish representative is disappointed, to the extent that a double "Ahhh" echoes in the night upon realizing this offence. Maybe Monday the Finns want to drink. Our party, this time larger in size, once again makes an attempt to visit the bar to drink a northern drink and sing a song. Once again the blinds are closed and the door is locked. A single "Ah" from our ... read more

Having spent eleven years as the United States Representative to the Infrastructure Committees, when the inviation arrived to attend the 50th anniversary celebrations in Brussels, I immediately accepted. It would be a wonderful opportunity to meet former colleagues. I hadn't been to Brussels since leaving in November 1995, so this would also be an opportunity to see our former neighbors and visit the places we enjoyed so much. Mike and Betty kindly allowed me to stay at their home and even let me borrow their car. Before the official events kicked off, my former boss Dave invited a close group of friends for dinner. It was good to see those I first met when I moved to Brussels in 1984. Most of them had moved back to their own countries by 1986 or 87 as their ... read more

In June of 1993, I took my first trip outside of America. It all came about like this. I had acquired a pass through work on Sabena Airlines to Brussels from any US gateway. All I had to do was pay a whopping $12 tax and we would be on our way. The pass was for two people so I invited one of my fellow workers named George. This would be the first of many trips with George. I had not even been working at the airline for a year, but I was already beginning to love this job!! On the evening of June 4, we took a red eye flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta. It was Delta 786, which was a 757 aircraft. We were seated up front in first class and I had ... read more

Grand Place is indeed grand. The main square of Brussels is surrounded by very old, very nice buildings. Only a block away he's standing. Le Maneken Pis. He's very small, only a foot or so tall. Yet his watering in the fountain never ends. What has he been drinking? And why is he so famous? He's so small... If it wasn't for the hoards of tourists stopping by this particular street corner to take a picture of this little marvel, it would easily be missed. But, and sadly enough, it's one of the most famous sights in Brussels, the administrative capital of Europe. The little peeing guy. Every now and then he's dressed up in different costumes. Not sure why. Certainly he doesn't care. It probably gives the tourists the sensation of having seen something new ... read more
