DAY 6: Christmas Eve! YEY! Usually this would be one of the most EXCITING nights of the year for me, i absolutely LOVE Christmas! However, this year, being in Europe and away from the fam it strangely doesnt have that christmasy ring to it. Anyways we are driving from Switzerland to Austria today, via one of the smallest countries in the world - Liechtenstein. We enjoy another sleep in up atop the clouds and make a nice lazy start to the bus at 9am. Good bye Beautiful Swiss alps, we will miss you lots! Anyway we dont have a very long drive today however we do cross a whole country before we hit the Austrian border. Liechtenstein takes only 25mins to drive from one side to the other and is home to its very own Prince ... read more

Our first Christmas away from home. No point sitting around feeling rejected, so we packed our bags and headed off to Austria. The lovely city of Salzburg has two claims to fame: 1. ‘The Sound of Music’ was filmed there 2. It is the birthplace of Mozart We decided to avoid both these things and see what else the region had to offer (okay - so we were too stingy to shell out the 36 euros for the ‘Sound of Music’ tour and the Mozart concerts were a tad pricey too) We stayed in an excellent hostel called St Sebastian - I think it used to be a monastery. There were statues of Jesus everywhere (even a strategically placed cross above our door) and our double room had two single beds. No complaints though, the location ... read more

It’s Christmas Eve in Salzburg, Austria. It feels different, no doubt. We went back to the Christmas Market in old town and did some shopping for our tiny Christmas morning tomorrow. The narrow streets were filled with holiday shoppers from all over the world. After lunch we visited the Festung Hohensalzburg which is the fortress on the hill above Salzburg. It is basically a small village inside a gigantic wall with guard towers, cannons and even a torture tower. Amazing that people had to live that way 400 years ago. Unfortunately it was too foggy (what's with all the damn fog?) to see any of the town below. Around 4:00pm we drove to Oberndorf to see and hear the performance of Stille Nacht (Silent Night) at the St. Nikolaus church. Silent Night was written in that ... read more

I rented a car today. The rental company was 5 miles from the hotel. That meant I had to find my way back. Turned the key, car jumped 5 feet. STICK SHIFT! I haven’t driven a stick in 10 years. None of the signs made any sense, but Jerry and I made it back without incident. After a scrumptious breakfast at our hotel (King’s Center, highly recommended) we wandered back down to the old part of town. There are hundreds of little streets (strasse’s) that are filled with shops of all kinds. One square had a farmers market, and all of the squares this time of year are serving sausages, sauerkraut and spiced wine. For lunch we made the mandatory trip to the Hofbrau Haus. What a fun place. Lots of people including locals in traditional ... read more

This is my last day in Vienna. My roommate, Alex, was kind enough to let me load some pictures on her computer so that I can put them on Facebook and on this blog. Unfortunately, my laptop is broken, so that is why I haven't updated in forever; I could have at the IES center, but you can't load pictures onto their computers, and I don't like posts on here without pictures ;) Today has been depressing, because it has been just a day of saying goodbye one person after the other. I love so many people here, and it is really strange to think that four months of my life could bring me so close to people, and these are people who I may never see again (although I hope that I DO see them ... read more

Well Austria is certainly a little chillier than Italy! We got very excited on the train with all the snow everywhere but by the time we arrived in Salzburg it was all gone :-( Never mind, Salzburg had a great Christmas atmosphere with markets and outdoor ice skating so we spent our time wandering around checking out all the decorations. The markets are also full of special Christmas punch and glüwein, a sort of hot mulled red wine, and there were people drinking throughout the markets. One of the big thing of course about being in Austria was the Wiener Schnitzels, Nick was in heaven, and initially planned to have one every day! The other thing was the beer halls. Following the map we found the street and the entrance, however the lack of noise made ... read more

So today we head out to climb the mountain to see Hohensalzburg - the big white fortress that overlooks the city of Salzburg. This is a very big mountain. Monchsberg is its name, meaning "Monks Mountain", as the first inhabitants were Monks (they pretty much ran the government way back when). Yes, I had to stop a couple of times, but the view was so wonderful that we all took advantage of the break to take pictures. There were apartments built into the hillside along the road that we were walking that were very, very old. One had a sign over the door in cast iron - 1585. Like I said, very, very old. We got to a bend in the road, and there were two plaques mounted in the stone in the side of the ... read more

After breakfast, the 3 of us headed toward Linzergasse on the other side of the Salzach River. This area is on the "new" side of town, but quite frankly, their "new" makes most of what is old in the U.S. look like it was built yesterday. The shops here are more practical for the people who "live" in Salzburg - but also have some of the more "high end" shopping for those seeking it. I found a store that sold Lithium batteries for my camera - I've been feeding regular AA batteries for the camera after every 30 pictures or so - that's about twice a day or more. Linzergasse was OK - but without the charm of the Getreidegasse across the river. We took a 4 hour "Bavarian Alps and Lakes" tour with Panorama Tours, ... read more
