No alarm set for this morning as we'll be in Vienna well before our check-in time. We have a very leisurely breakfast and have a chat to two Americans who are riding the length of the Danube. They're thinking about coming to do some riding in Australia and asked if Darwin was a good place to start. Hopefully we've set them straight. We ride out of Tulln just after 9am and make our way to the river which will take us all the way to Vienna. Just after we leave Tulln behind we see a girl riding in front of us with a jersey that says Australia on her back. We both look t each other and think, great an other Aussie to talk to. Leena was actually German and her friend had given her the ... read more

Friday. Train day. Up with the larks (relatively) we set off for scheibbs (sheeeeebs) to catch a train. We did indeed catch the train which although dated felt decidedly sturdy and left dead on time, how very efficiently Austrian. Hoping to get to Prochlarn to change for Vienna all was well and we settled in. Until, that was, the train stopped at a station and we had to get on a bus. All very exciting but as the bus pulled into prochlarn we realised that our connection was just a couple of minutes away. We raced off the bus, to no avail though, as we found ourselves behind slow and slower with giant suitcases and as we stepped onto the platform, with the stupid Austrian efficiency, the train left dead on time. Great. Opening up my ... read more

This is our second day in Vienna, and perhaps we should have planned our time better, but this morning instead of venturing into the city center, we are embarking on an ebike ride along the Danube into the countryside. Neither of us had ever ridden an ebike, but earlier this summer we did a 26-mile ride on our regular bikes, so we figured we could handle it. Our group consisted of 14 passengers including us, and 3 tour guides with Wolfgang taking the lead and the others following in the rear to make sure no one got lost. Having never seen an ebike, I assumed it was some sort of electric motorcycle, but it was not. It’s basically just regular bicycle, in our case it was an 8 speed with a selection knob on the right ... read more

It was a rainy when we woke up in Vienna this morning. After a few hectic days, we decided that today would be more of a day of rest. We started our morning with the close-up walking tour of Vienna. The difference between the close-up walking tour and the regular walking tour is that the regular tour drove around Vienna in the bus and you looked out the window, and they dropped you close to St-Stephens Square near the church. The close-up tour was more adventurous, which means instead of getting on the bus, we walked to the subway station with our tour guide Antonija and rode the subway into town. There were 14 of us brave souls who went on the close-up tour with its promise of 10,000 steps (Jody got 10,000 steps, I only ... read more

We arrived in Vienna and were treated to a private concert at the Palais Liechtenstein. Greeted with a glass of sparkling and we were treated to a program of Strauss and Mozart including music, opera and ballet. A very polished performance in a stunning building. The Garden Palace is owned by the Princley Family of Liechtenstein and the Golden Carriage was one of five commissioned in 1738. It is the only one to survive as it was dismantled and stored until being brought to Vienna in 2003. The following day we opted for a bus tour to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. We travelled out of Vienna past a series of government owned green houses that are heated by the energy output of the nearby incinerators. Our guide gave us a brief rundown on Slovakias history. ... read more

I have uploaded photos that should have been included in earlier blogs about Budapest. There is one picture of a bathroom sign, that explains how different cultures can be. I can remember being in a bathroom, in between flights, tired from the 4 o'clock alarm, not quite sure what country/city I was in until I saw the sign that instructed people to put used toilet paper in the bin and not the toilet bowl, and I knew I was in Athen's airport. Travelling has a way of knocking you out of your comfort zone, which is a good thing. Perspectives change. Now my bathroom at home does not seem too small at all. I had one half its size in a hotel in Santorini, and could function well enough. Throughout Austria the signs for public bathrooms ... read more

I decided to take a lazy morning and have brunch in a cafe, then walk in palace gardens. It is lovely walking along cobbled streets or sidewalks, watching people go about their day amongst finely decorated buildings. There is something comforting about the size and stature of these buildings, they seem eternal, as if nothing could knock them down. I strolled around picking out the cafe with lots of people, in shade, serving lots of proteins as well as sweets and caffiene. Along the street I saw the chocolate maker shop and popped in. I bought six round chocolates (am eating them now....OMG, so good) of various flavours; chili, hazelnut, salty, layered nugat. Window shopping is a delight. Finally I sat in a cafe and ordered a cappuchino and omlette. There is no rush to take ... read more

This afternoon I went to Belevedere and paid to see their collection. Worth every penny, so much more enjoyable art then in earlier museums, I thought. Today is a hot sunny day and the streets and museums were crowded with tourists. It felt like a weekend, and I am glad I am leaving Vienna for a few days. I am even more glad that I spent the afternoon looking at such lovely paintings. I will post my favourites, with info tiles for some of them. After touring Belevedere, I went in search of St. Stephen cathedral in the centre of the city. I got lost two days ago trying to find it. For any travelers, take the wide pedestrian street in between the Bristol Hotel and the Opera house, it goes directly to the cathedral, passing ... read more
