My daily life and routine are starting to fall nicely into place here in Austria; my body clock has adjusted to the 6am starts every morning and I'm enjoying having the afternoons at my disposal since the latest I ever finish work is 11.30 am. The weather has however taken me by surprise as on Wednesday this week the temperature suddenly dropped from Tuesday's 17/18 degrees to about 8/9 degrees after a thunderstorm on Tuesday night and has remained this low ever since! It also brought plenty of rain and wind with it to contrast Tuesday's bright sunshine, but thankfully it was bright and dry again by the weekend. It's fair to say that the winter coats, scarves and boots have officially come out of the wardrobe and I sense that winter has now arrived in Austria.
Mamma Mia. The last two weekends however, have hands down been the best here so far! On Saturday 18th October, Emily, Jacob and I took another trip to Vienna, however this time we went to watch 'Mamma Mia!' at the theatre in the afternoon. As a fan of musicals, I was very very excited for this and had spent the previous
Mum in Vienna
Was so nice to have mum here in Austria with me for a weekend week listening to the famous ABBA songs in German on YouTube to ensure that I was able to sing along. The show definitely didn't disappoint, it was absolutely brilliant and they even sang 'Waterloo' in English at the end which meant that we could sing and dance along properly. I was also quite proud of myself for understanding the whole thing as even the songs had been translated into German...although I suppose it helped that we also already knew the story and the songs so we had an idea what was happening even if we occasionally lost track of the German. We had also treated ourselves to lunch at the Staatsoper in Vienna (the State opera) where me and Emily ate Schinkenfleckerl, a kind of square pasta/noodles with ham and a sauce, and Jacob had a selection of 3 different Austrian sausages and a bread roll. So all in all that was a fab day.
Mum. This weekend I had a taste of home life again in the form of a lovely visit from my Mum. I was very excited for her visit and to have the chance to show her where I live, as well as
Cafe Museum
Tea and Cake at cafe Museum the local area and my school etc. She landed in Vienna on Friday evening, and after meeting her at the airport we came back to my room in Pinkafeld where we spent Friday and Saturday night. On Saturday we wandered around Pinkafeld before heading into Oberwart where I introduced her to Claudia and we had lunch in a restaurant called 'die Bank'. I had my first burrito ever there, and I have to say I really enjoyed it! I took mum on a tour around Oberwart and showed her my school and the Primary school where I also teach, as well as nipping to Claudia's for a quick cup of tea. To ensure the tour of my daily life was complete, we finished off the afternoon by having a cup of tea and a piece of cake (mum's favourite pass time) in a cafe in Pinkafeld called Konditorei Ulreich and ate at a local restaurant in the evening.
The Hilton. On Sunday we left Pinkafeld and headed back to Vienna. We were spending Sunday night there, and this was perhaps one of the highlights of Mum's stay. Not only was it nice just to spend time with my mum
Hilton
Our Room wandering around beautiful Vienna, but the hotel we stayed in was the Hilton hotel by the river Danube, and when we arrived we were told that we had been upgraded to an executive room which just topped everything off! After my boarding school room here in Pinkafeld, the hotel room with its two queen beds and view of the river was a massive luxury and it did not disappoint. It even had a huge writing desk which I enjoyed posing at. After arriving in Vienna on Sunday morning, we met with Jacob and his family (who were also visiting) in Cafe Museum, our favourite cafe, for a standard tea and cake before heading off to explore.
As it was getting fairly late by the time we made it back out into the city after checking into the Hotel, I had the chance to see the Capital at night for the first time, and I have to say that I appreciate Vienna much more because of it. It was amazing to see all the beautiful buildings lit up and the nightlife of the city. We ate at a restaurant called 'Figlmüller' which serves hands down the best schnitzel in Vienna.
Vienna
The Staatsoper at night. Beautiful. On Monday morning we went to Schonbrunn Palace and walked around the gardens and behind the fountain and then we visited Mozart's house in Vienna (which proved quite difficult to find?!) We then paid Cafe Museum a final visit for lunch where I had the best burger EVER and mum had an interesting ham roll before heading back to the airport in time for mum's flight back to the UK. It was sad to say goodbye to her again, but it was so nice to have her here for the weekend and its not that long until Christmas!
Since I was also granted Tuesday off work that week, it turned out to be quite a good week/weekend! And I sense that there are more exciting weekends to come.....
