Since we were up early after a surprisingly cooler night we were off and away on our bikes at 8 o’clock hoping to finish the day early enough to avoid the heat. It was also a long day covering 64kms. We biked along on a glorious cooler morning with a calm river and trees right down to the biking path and river. At Au, we crossed over to the south side on a little ferry and continued along the famous Schlogen Loop. You cannot tell that you are riding back towards where you started as it seems like any other bend. It is more obvious on a map or from the air. It was certainly the best part of the day in lovely scenery.
At Kaiserau we stopped at a pretty camping site for refreshments at a café with a not so friendly hostess who didn’t speak a word of English. The camping area had amazing little dwellings fit for living in permanently.
We continued on to a town called Aschach where we purchased meats, cheese and bread rolls for lunch. We were impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of the shop owner. By now the day was heating
up and looking ominously like being extremely hot like other days despite getting away early. Aschach is a lovely town with a popular promenade along the river and gothic style houses in the town. It’s a pity the weather is so hot as there is much to see but the heat saps any energy to do more than get on with the biking.
From Aschach we crossed back over the river to the north side and took a short cut across country to Feldkirchen which was through maize, soya bean and brassica crops. We rejoined the R1/Donau trail and continued along the river until we reached some recreation lakes. What a find to have a picnic lunch. We had a seat, a shady spot and a lake to swim in, clothes and all. That swim was delicious. Cool and refreshing and we could bike for some time with wet gear before we would get too hot again.
On we went past a large rowing course and into Ottensheim where we stopped for a Radler and a cool off. This was to stand us in good stead for the last 10km which it didn’t do. From here we hit
Back to the north side
The bridge from Aschach, a pretty town with gothic and renaissance houses and a developed promenade along the river bank. the main road into Linz with continuous noisey traffic, the occasional train, hills and heat. We were exceedingly hot and bothered by the time we got into Linz and then had the hopeless task of finding the hotel on the other side of the river. We couldn’t figure it out but with a bit of help from the GPS and a few mistakes we eventually found our way to the hotel. I was totally knackered and about to boil with the heat. It has stayed up around 36 degrees and has not abated even at 10.30. The hotel has ceiling fans but all they do is circulate hot air. To think that I couldn’t wait to get into shorts and sandals when in NZ. Now it’s too hot for even them!
We took a taxi into Linz to check out the town. It is a lovely city with beautiful buildings, mostly churches or cathedrals. The Dom has very ornate architecture and the others have onion dome spires. The streets are wide with lovely shops and many café’s. The favourite pastime seems to be eating icecream and drinking beer. The day was finished with a good meal at a Greek
Linz skyline at 8pm
Linz has many steeples, all of differing architecture. This isn't the main Dom but is just as impressive. A nice city to visit restaurant.
The only downside to the cycling trip is the heat. It saps energy and makes it difficult to spend time looking at attractions as it will just prolong the agony of the day as the heat builds up from 2pm to very hot.
