One of the more serious drawbacks to modern digital camera technology is that the memory sticks have been known “without notice” to crash or dump digital image data. This is what happened to us and this explains why the lack of pictures on this journal entry. We inexplicably lost many of our travel images from Germany and all images of Austria. Read on though, for this is a very interesting part of our trip. From Bacharach we headed south to Rothenburg (ROE-ten-burg), Germany’s best preserved walled town. We spent the night at a classy new hotel in an old building; The Hotel Gerberhaus. After an early dinner of delicious wiener schnitzel, we took the Night Watchman’s tour (definately a must do when in Rothenburg) of the city walls and afterwards we went "to hell”. When asking ... read more

beautiful country! reminded us of sound of music - rolling hills, green forests, lakes, etc. it wasnàt as grand as other palces, but still very charming. it was nice and calm, clean, and pleasant. we did, however, see awesome cathedrals like st. james and wilorn (sp?) then we also kicked it in the main square where emporer maximilian I sat in his balcony with a golden roof, and watched his knights joust below him. ... read more

Staying in a youth hostel is sometimes the most wonderful way of travelling, mostly because of the people you meet. Schwedenhaus (The Swedish House!) in Innsbruck is of the nicer kind. Right on the river Inn, at the foot of the mountains. Wonderful. I'm stuffed in to a room with one Italian guy and one German dude. The Italian speaks very little English. With a mix of Italian/Spanish/English I am able to establish that he's on his way back to Italy from a little Alp vacation. The German speaks very little English. Slightly easier for him to get around in German-speaking Austria though...I manage to establish that he's on his way to hitch-hike back to Dresden, in time for the spring semester. The Italian and the German decide to initiate a conversation. They have no common ... read more

The bar is not bad. Standard interior, not overly fancy, but certainly not shabby. The crowd is mature - in the sense that the average person graduated high school long time ago - and trendy/artsy, if that is a legitimate combination. We get a corner table. A perfect spot, we're able to overlook the whole field. Complete control. The beer is good, German/Austrian or something. Works for me... The company is good, brains and beauty. Still, there's something in the air. Not tension, hate, love, or anything to that effect. Something more tangible. Smoke. Not cigarette smoke. This substance irritates my eyes. Cigarette smoke does not. Having no sense of smell, I have to guess. Considering the fact that it would take a lot of something to get to someone's eyes, and the fact that we're ... read more

UK & Europe, May 1993 Can't remember much about Innsbruck or maybe it is because we didn’t spend so much time there. I think by this stage we were all reaching saturation point for all the sight seeing we had done up till now. By now we had been through 3 countries and so many cities and towns in about 7 days, that we needed a breather. This includes all the travelling time from London through all the countries we had seen thus far. But of course we didn't sit still - you can't let an opportunity like this go wasted. We walked around the town and saw the Golden roof - a landmark of Innsbruck constructed for Emperor Maximilian to watch tournaments in the square below. We also visited a most beautiful church, the Innsbruck ... read more

It had been some time since Linda and I had been on a ski trip. By now the kids, or at least the girls, were getting to be old enough to learn to ski. Our church was sponsoring a week-long ski trip to Innsbruck, Austria, so we signed up knowing that we would be with good friends. So on Friday, February 14th, Valentines Day, we loaded up our car with our snow gear and drove part of the way to Innsbruck, and on Saturday completed the journey to the ski village of Igls, just south of Innsbruck. Our ski lessons were from Sunday through Friday. Linda decided to stay with Will and sled. She really never enjoed downhill skiing. Tamara, Rosanna, and I were assigned to our respective classses based upon our previous experience. The girls ... read more

Our first Christmas in Overijse we spent with my colleague Dave W. and his wife Linda and their three boys on a ski trip to Kirchdorf, Austria returning to Overijse on Christmas Eve, where on Christmas Day we had dinner together at their home. By then my sister Carol had moved to Overijse from Thailand, where she would live with us for about two years. She joined us for this trip. 14 December 1984 Friday. We fondly remembered the Kriskindelmarkt in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, so decided to make that our stopover destination on the way to Austria. We arrived by mid afternoon, and stayed for the last time with the farmer and his wife on the outskirts of town. After renewing our acquaintence, we walked to the market to see the festive decorations and Christmas ... read more

Every January it was a tradition for the office to take a weeklong all inclusive ski trip to Erpfendorf, Austria, near St Johann and Kitzbuhl. On Saturday we would drive directly there and checked into the Larchenhof Hotel. Nan and Stacey, our neighbors from Glan Munchweiller, along with their kids Lowell and Allison, would convoy with us. Sunday morning after breakfast we were divided into groups by level of experience. Linda and I were grouped with the beginners. We proceeded to the bunny slope to learn how to snow plow and schuss. That was pretty much how we spent the rest of the day. The second day we were subdivided into slow beginners and fast beginners. This is when Linda and I were split up. The fast beginners then went to the top of the hill ... read more
