The guests at Haus Hepi
Each day there seemed to be someone to farewell as some went and some came. This time - our turn. Today was a day of travel.
Firstly we said goodbye to our fellow guests and swapped addresses and then goodbye to one of our hosts, Lisa. It feels a bit strange as for the past 10 days we've felt part of the families we've stayed with. It's really a home away from home.
The thunderstorm last night has caused some flooding in Hallstatt we heard with water and mud running down the mountain and into the market square. The traffic was held up and fire trucks that do that sort of service were everywhere. I'm not sure of the extent of the damage. Elsewhere seemed to be fine.
Since Larry was to transport gear through to Ebensee for those moving on, he took us with him instead of our going to Salzburg. We went through to Gmunden and onto Attnang Puchhien where we booked a ticket through to Innsbruck. It was then goodbye to our host Larry as well and goodbye to that part of our holiday.
After a 3 hour journey via Salzbury and then mostly rolling farmland we headed back into the Tyrolean Mountains and Innsbruck. The countryside is very nice with tidy farms, typical
Our hosts at Haus Hepi
Lisa and Larry, our excellent hosts houses and no rubbish. It's very green after all the rain, but it's also another very hot day - over 30 degrees. It's a good day to be in a car and on a train in a cool place.
On arriving in Innsbruck it was like getting out into an oven. Wow, very hot indeed! Fortunately we only had 3 blocks to the Hotel Goldene Krone which is right in downtown Innsbruck but very conveniently placed for walking to most sites. It's a comfortable B&B hotel with just the essentials. It should do fine. After settling in we walked downtown to the Information Office to get information on what to do for the next two days. So far it appears to be a busy, modern and sophisticated place with very nice shops and an interesting historical old town to visit.
Dinner tonight was almost directly outside the hotel. We entered what appeared to be a alley where the owners and employees were sitting, talking and eating. They waved us in to sit at a table by theirs instead of inside, so we sat down in the alley way to have our dinner. The men who served us (3
The Triumph Gate in Innsbruck
Our hotel was right next to the Gate. A great place to be - only a short walk down the street to the main part of town and the Old Town of them at various times) spoke only Italian. No German. No English. They made no attempt to make themselves understood but with pointing and miming with the odd Italian word thrown in we got through the evening sitting outside with them. They talked non-stop, loudly, and periodically did the serving. Meanwhile, inside, all appeared perfectly normal. The main guy was like "the Godfather", stern and obtuse. The second oldest guy was quite pleasant. The 3rd guy was just "the boy" and did the running around at their command. We had a large plate of antipasto - very good. The lasagne Linds had was very good. Somehow I was convinced that I should have the tiramasu which I did and it was very good too. All, in all a very funny experience. Back at the hotel we explained to the Italian girl at the desk what happened, and she said she wouldn't have understood them either as they were from the South and not the North where she came from.
