The next morning the fire was still burning in Hallstat, Madame Sydler said that there was another salt mine at Altaussee, I could take the train and then a bus to get there. I have been listening to a book about salt, in preparation to go to a salt mine, so I decided I did not want to miss the opportunity if I could help it. At the TI they told me that there is not a direct bus, I would have to take a taxi, they have a 'cheap' taxi service in Bad Ausee, 9.50 euro each way. Because the road and rail is closed between Obertraun and Bad Aussee, Larry took us and our bikes to a top of a hill near Bad Aussee where he would pick us up later in the day. The start was ominous in that the first few kilometres was downhill flat out - which meant we had to bike up it later in the day. Once we arrived at Altaussee, we took the R61 bike trail to Blaa Alm which was several kilometres up a valley to a ski field, through forest and on to open meadow. It seems to be a popular place in the weekend with many cyclists and motor bikers coming and going. Eight and a half hours from Brisbane to Bangkok, five hour stopover, ten and a half hour flight from Bangkok to Wien, one and a half hour stopover, and a fifty minute flight from Wien to Salzburg. I have arrived. Picked up from the airport, I think it was three degrees celcius, quite balmy apparently! The snow is at least a metre deep here in Bad Aussee, Salzkammergut, everything is so crisp and clean and white. I haven't seen snow since I was three or four years old, and I am completely overwhelmed by its beauty. Thomas and his father, Herr Schlacher collected me from the airport and we drove up the alps to their village in an alpine valley. The spruce trees are evergreens but everything is covered in snow.
