So we've been chilling (both literally in figuratively) in the Alps this past week. The actual place is St. Johann im Pongau, but they don't have the location on this blog, so I picked one close by. We've been staying in a nice hotel where, once again, we don't quite fit in, but everyone's been real nice and we've met a couple cool people (mostly much older than us). The view from our hotel room is incredible, with mist-shrouded mountains every morning that burn off by afternoon to show the snow-capped peaks beneath them. The other day we took a trip with this guy we met at the hotel (a bit of a Dead-head, but a real nice guy). He drove us out to the Liechtensteinklamm, which is a gorge cut straight through one of the ... read more

Wow!! What a beautiful country! We spent our longest time in one campsite in Fusch. Our surroundings were amazing. We hiked everyday and did one overnight hike. Hiking is different in Austria-it is acceptable to use cable cars, mountains are very steep-straight up and straight down usually 1000m with few countour paths! When we hiked overnight we stayed in a guest house(Gliewitzerhutte) at 2100m above sea level. We made friends with lovely Austrian couple - Barbara and Matthew. Matthew grew up in the area and told us a lot about the hiking in the region. The one thing we didn't know was that the whistling sound you hear when hiking down the mountain is not birds but Mermouteer or Manke (?sp) as the locals call them communicating with each other (Dassie like creatures with long tails). ... read more

We came to Zell am See on a whim and found mountain paradise. Having never heard of this lakeside Austrian town, the initial magical trainride deep into mountains blooming with Christmas trees, hidden castles & crumbling stone bridges over aweinspiring gorges was an adventure in itself. A personal pick-up at the station by our friendly Irish B&B hosts began 3 days of luxury. A room all to ourselves (devoid of snoring, drunk travellers), fluffy white doonas and free buffet breakfast. The afternoon of our arrival saw us accidentally hiking to the peak of Schmitten hohe, our 2000m high neighbour, after planning a lazy walk to a hillside pub a mere 40 minutes walk away. 5 hours later we were descending through alpine meadows with glaciers to the left of us and cows to the right, our ... read more

Connor's blog today: So finally we got in some skiing!! It was fantastic; the hills were phenomenal, although really hard to ski because they were so steep. After a hard day of fantastic skiing we relaxed in the whirlpool (hot tub). It was not too hot, but after a dip in the cold ice-plunge pool, it felt steaming. After a good night sleep, we awoke early and once again got ready for skiing, but this time Austin and I were skiing with an instructor. After we ate breakfast, we met our instructor. His name was Jonas (pronounced Yonis). He was from Sweden. He could speak English, but sometimes it was hard to understand him because of his accent. He was hilarious and cool and exciting. He was exciting because he took Austin and I to the ... read more

Kaprun Austria March 2008- Altitude Sickness Finally, I have a minute to type a blog from the adults’ perspective. And the reason I have time to type now, is because I’ve been sick (with altitude sickness) for the last 24 hours. Today, I stayed back in the room while Dave took the kids skiing again. Altitude sickness is miserable, but, even after spending the night sleeping next to the toilet, I can still honestly say that skiing the Alps is the greatest experience. I only wish I could have joined my family on the slopes today. Yesterday, I was so enamored with skiing the Austria Alps that I was trying to calculate how much it would cost to extend our stay a few days. But, because of my reaction to extreme altitudes, skiing is going to ... read more

Today we finally went skiing for the first day. It was awesome! Skiing today was probably by far the best time I have ever had while skiing. Skiing here was better then any other place I had skied before and trust me; I have skied in lots of different places. This was the best vacation I ever had I am having soooooooooooooooooooooo much fun! I had a great time and the weather was excellent too. I think that weather was on our side today because the whole week we have been here it was raining. The mountain we skied on was huge! And when I say huge I mean like higher than the clouds, and enormously huge. Let me tell you about it. First we went and rented the equipment, which surprisingly didn’t take that long. ... read more

Hi it is Connor age 9. When we get on to the plane for Washington I immediately notice that the plane was huge! The economy seats were great! I can not even imagine the first class seats. After the head aching plane ride we saw the first class seats, they were almost three feet wide and had a massage in it. Also it had a computer with internet connections and a flat screen TV! When we were driving in the car it was supposed to take 2 ½ hours but it ended up taking 5-7 hours because our road was blocked. After we turned around and we were back on track there was a hold up. We tried to figure out what happen but there was a big tracker trailer in front of us. But we ... read more

Hey it’s me again the kid who types long boring blogs about stuff your not even interested in. Can you guess who I am? Well it’s me Austin Peters your daily blogger. Right now we are going to Innsbruck, Austria. I am in the car typing while my mom is having a heart attack about the winding roads over cliffs. Well I don’t have much to tell you right now, (surprisingly) because we are in the car on our way there. The only thing I could tell you is that there are a bunch of churches and castles around every turn. You would think that old ancient churches and castles would amaze me but after you see twenty or so of them then you think “who cares.” Well I am bored now I am only continuing ... read more

Hi it’s Austin we finally arrived in Europe. Our trip to Europe wasn’t all that fun, but the trip it’s self is amazing I am so much fun. The trip here was very long, exhausting, and at some points scary. This is how it went. First we had to go to the Rochester airport which is only ½ hour from our house, so the trip to the airport wasn’t all that bad. The when we got there we had two hours to kill (that’s because mom wanted us to get there plenty early) so we had breakfast and went over to gate B6 to wait for our flight. Mom wouldn’t let us use our DS until we got to the Washington airport. My brother and I were reading until Connor started to get restless. He kept ... read more

This Austin and this is my entry. my entry isn't going to be corny like my brother Connor's. He wrote his corny because he is a suck up and does is to try to impress my mom or be funny but he's not. Nobody likes a suck up. I am very exited to go to Austria. I have never been outside the continent of North America before except for when i went to Mexico. I think that isn't in North America. Isn't Mexico in Central America or is it in North America? what ever anyway i am exited to go but we aren't going doing a school break so when I come back i will have a lot of homework to make up. I HATE HOMEWORK!!!!!! going Austria is probably worth all of the homework so ... read more
