Thursday, 8/07 Today we had our excursion to the Melk Abbey in the Austrian countryside. We had to get up early to make it to the train station in time to catch the train at 9:45am. I was making my breakfast, and I really wanted some toast. They have REALLY good jam here, and I want to eat it all the time now. I had one slice of bread left, and it was moldy, so I had to eat some of my other stuff. When I panic-shopped the first day, I don't think I thought to check the dates of the bread. But I have been a more scrutinous shopper since. We took our regular U-bahn line to the train station, and got on a train resembling a nicer version of Amtrak. We had a "group ... read more

After a good nights sleep (the bed didn’t seem too hard - no worse than the Chinese beds!) we decided we were going to head west to a place called Bad Aussee (loosely translated bad means bath or bathe and see is lake) in an area we later discovered to be called Salzkammergut (love that name!). We were staying off the autobahns as we did not have a sticker on our window but most of the roads were pretty good. Once again there were many motorcyclists on big bikes taking advantage of the good weather on the weekend - and a few of the men in blue with their radars at the entrances to small towns. The scenery all the way was pretty spectacular, especially the mountains, and when we got to Bad Aussee we passed ... read more

Geo: 48.2271, 15.3296Breakfast - today, they served a warm cream cheese strudel topped with raisins. Most likely, it was leftover dessert from yesterday, from the guest house's restaurant. It was soggy and probably microwaved; it was decent but might have been very good had it been fresh. They had some really good plain buns; I cut back on the meat and cheese today and instead went pretty hard on the homemade preserves. There were also some good poppyseed buns, but they were pretty bad with the preserves - I didn't notice until too late, but there was tons of salt sprinkled on them. Everybody in Hallstatt must have high blood pressure with the amount of salt they ingest! On the boat to the train station - somebody finally guessed that I'm Chinese, and not Korean or Japanese! ... read more

We had seen some of Europe’s best cities, chateaus, castles, museums, ruins, churches, parks and neighborhoods. It was time now to see the countryside. I figured, what better country to sample the countryside as beautiful Austria? When I think of Austria the first thing that comes to my mind is, “The Sound of Music” set in Salzburg and the picturesque countryside beyond. A fantastic opportunity existed at the train station - a combination ticket (ship+train+culture) for a cruise on the river Danube along the Wachau Valley. Train trip to Melk, a visit to Melk, a boat cruise down the Danube from Melk to Krems, a visit to Krems and train ride back to Vienna. It sounded great! The weather was gorgeous, a perfect day for sailing and we went to the Vienna Westbahnhof to buy our ... read more

... read more

Yeahhhhh!!!! Everything's packed and I'm as ready as I can get... I'm almost sure I forgot something essential but I guess I'll not notice something's missing until I need it and that's going to be far far away... *thinkthinkthink* Well, my pets are taken care of, even my mexican red-knee-tarantula has host parents for the next few weeks... I don't have to worry about food rotting away in the fridge or turning off the lights, electricity, the gas or anything else (viva la living with your parents!!!) and I even tidied up my room properly *pattingmyselfontheshoulder*... Still, I've got a nagging suspicion I forgot something... hmmmm.... Well, I'll find out eventually! See U next in Australia!!!! Love, Jani PS: Heathrow-airport's still driving me round the bend... Luggage-check, and everything... *gah* They've so run amok with security ... read more

Gah, I'm going completely nuts... Today I tried out 4 different suitcases and after packing and unpacking and packing and un... I finally found the best one and weighed it... It was TOO heavy!!!!! So unpacking it was again and getting rid of unnecessary ballast. My heart is bleeding... I have to leave behind loads of grand clothes...Some essentials like an additional towel and most terrible, some pairs of SHOES have to stay behind as well... *sob* And after all those sacrifices it was still too heavy! Finally I ended up weighing HAIRDRYERS!!!!!! and packing the lighter one... I weighed hairdryers... I can't believe I did that... That's sooooo sick!!!! I still can't imagine you're allowed to take 23kg, only... I'm going there for a month... 4 weeks!!! It's impossible to pack everything needed for a month's ... read more

Hiah!!! Still home... Counting days...and planning my farewell party!!! If you go, go with a bang and with style! I've also started making a list of what to pack and of what there's still left to do before my departure... But mainly I'm just lying around, my nose in a book, soaking in every English word that could come in handy in Australia. My mum's driving me nuts, telling everyone how crazed out she is about me going off all by me onesie (as Cpt. Jack Sparrow would call it)... Though I've got to say that I'm starting to show nerves myself... Mainly about getting off one plane in London and then trying to get on the right one to Sydney... on time... If they change the terminal, I'm dead... or rather stranded in London... not ... read more

The prettiest part of the Lower Austrian Danube is the wine growing area, the Wachau. We cycled into a pleasant bit of rain which kept the temperature comfortable through the afternoon. Stayed indoors in Melk with a 2 bedroom apartment on the Danube rented from a Glenn Clark look alike who did not give us a receipt for our payment. ... read more
