Caribbean Honeymoon Finally we had the chance to go to our honeymoon...8 months after the wedding - but February is usually my toughest winter month - it is grey and cold in DC, and it is so nice to get away to the sun and warmth. Since I travel so much for work, we decided we wanted to go to a destination that was relatively easy to reach and did not cross too many timezones. So the Caribbean it was! I have always dreamed about going on an overnight sail trip, so we decided to charter a boat for 4 days and spend the remainder days on St. John and St. Thomas. The warm Caribbean sun met us at the airport. Kurt and Victoria, our hosts for the sailboat charter were waiting for us at the ... read more

Hey you land lubbers, just wanted to tell you I have finally gone ahead and bought my own Catamaran down here in st. thomas and believe it's time to do my own cruising again. My last boat I thing I was in the BVI's and hanging out at a local bar, and some rum later I realized I had left something on in the boat and sure enough it burned to the water line. That was a few years ago so I have been chartering ever since and decided it's time to get another one and see how long this one lasts (heheheheh) This Catamaran is beautiful, has plenty of room, sails well and is big and fast. With these winds down here it should make going from place to place a real breeze..........play on words. ... read more

hEY MATES, Sorry it took so long to get back, had to have some rum you know, it is 5o'clock and had to do my daily deed. So as I was saying I was on a catamaran and it was fantastick....................... Big, roomy and fast. Plenty of room for 4-6 people with heads, showers and own stateroom. The head and shower are in the room. Lovely Had some friends with me and we had many of those nightly parties ashore, foxys was as always a real header. If you guys or gals ever want to have a great time sailing man take a cat, their better than anything i have been on. Going to cut this short, the rums a calling, se yeah.... read more

I am a certified open water diver! Oh, I can’t believe it’s done, I did it. I mostly just feel relieved right now! Relieved to have it complete, done, out of the way. I’m free to enjoy St. Thomas as I please when I return here, and free to dive in any of the ports! I am also very pleased with myself. No panic today. No fear. Jay (my instructor) and I fired through all of my skills. My ears were troublesome today and my mask was irritating me, but my skills were perfect and my nerves were too. After “Open Water 3" (our 2nd dive of the day), as we came out of the water, I said I feel a million times better. Jay could see it. When I snorkeled in Barbados last week, I ... read more

Today I was meant to again do more diving. I was good the night before - went to the crew bar for only gingerale, went to sleep at a moderately decent hour, set the alarm to get up early . . . except I made the classic AM/PM mess-up with the alarm, so I woke up an hour late, having missed the free shuttle to the beach. I rushed around, got in a taxi and headed out to Coki Beach. When I arrived, I learned that Jay (my instructor) left a message with Shore Excursions that he’s sick and can’t dive, except obviously I hadn’t gotten the message . . . thankfully, another instructor, Ed, was willing to help out and I still got to go through my confined water skills today. Now, back at the ... read more

Today I went back to Coki Beach in St. Thomas to pick up my dive training. Sadly, I am now buddy-less, without Terri. She’s unable to complete the course with me, so I’m on my own. The first time we went out diving, I was so nervous. I hadn’t expected to be and it left me worried I wouldn’t be able to push myself through to complete this course. Made me wonder if I even still wanted to. But I had a different instructor this time. And he’s awesome. He’s super laid-back, no pressure, fun guy who makes the academics a breeze. Then we went out in the water and he was so patient and encouraging without a touch of patronizing. He gave me just enough support to help me through my nerves but still left ... read more

After spending the entire day in Puerto Rico as a walking zombie, I awoke this morning completely rejuvenated and ready to start exploring. The first port of call on this cruise was Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. I had heard much about the over commercialized nature of the island of St. Thomas. However, I wanted to see a part of the Virgin Islands that was a bit untouched. Prior to the trip, I had done a little research and discovered that the nearby island of St. John's was pretty much untouched by mass tourism. On St. John's you would find stunning natural beauty, white sand beaches, and the only tropical rain forest in the US National Park System. With all that in mind, we decided to take the cruise sponsored ... read more

We’re in St. Thomas! Being in port almost every day is really great because we can see so many places. But sea days were always my catch up on sleep days. Already I’m struggling to get up in the mornings to go out in the ports when that’s what we do every day! Eventually I got up though and off the ship. I’m planning to get my open water scuba certification in St. Thomas starting next week. So at least for the next few weeks, today was my only day to just sort of explore the port area. We’re docked in Havensight, in the bay of Charlotte Amalie. Only a few blocks away is St. Thomas Sky Ride, a gondola lift that goes 700 feet up to the top of Paradise Point. So up I went! ... read more

After embarking on and disembarking from yet another budget journey with my brave travel companion, we compiled a few Do's & Don'ts for the people in our age bracket considering booking a cruise anytime in the near future. Having just returned and about to slip into a sugar coma from a mixed bowl of Apple Jacks, Fruity Pebbles & Corn Pops, I am posting this now while the details are fresh in my delirious mind that's about to hit the keyboard: DON'T: Go on a Princess 'Caribbean Cocoon' Cruise of retired senior citizens if your party consists of just you and one other person of the same sex who is marrying age but has no wedding ring, otherwise you will spend the whole trip being eyeballed by old-timers wondering why you aren't at one of the ... read more

After 8 gallons of paint, numerous shopping trips, and 6 weeks of clean up and remodel work on the condo; the 5 days we spent in St. Thomas and St. Johns was pure heaven! The flights were good, the hotel was beautiful, the weather was lovely, and the water was divine. On top of all that, we were there with friends who knew the islands well. We got to see the places that the average tourists miss. Our rather beat up rental car took us to beaches around the island and to mountain top lookouts with spectacular views. We ate island food in local beachside restaurants and listened to island music in small sand floor tiki huts by the water. Without our friends' island knowledge we would never have found these local haunts. The beaches were ... read more
