So now that I am back in school (MBA) I get a "Spring Break", so this year for spring break Haley and I took a trip down to Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). T&T are a set of Caribbean islands just off the coast of Venezuela. Trinidad is the larger and more populous of the main islands; Tobago is much smaller, comprising about 6% of the total area and 4% of the population. I was very interested to check out this somewhat off-the-beaten-track tropical island. It was a little more difficult to gather information and plan this trip because T&T is not a typical tourist destination…which excited Haley and me even more! We were also looking forward to finding a little culture down there, T & T’s demographics lean heavily towards "Indo-Trinidadians" followed closely by "Afro-Trinidadians". I ... read more

Today was the island of Tobago, back to the tiny island feel with only 55,000 inhabitants. The island seemed to be pretty wealthy, I guess they have oil there so that's probably why. There was a great culture on the island, we got to hear some vodu stories, I know how to make a love pie now, and I also know the 2 antidotes. One you can swalow some silver, or 2 you can poor a guiness into your left shoe and drink it. We took another tour this mourning and went to the Argyle Waterfall. It is a beautiful three-tier waterfall that has a pool at the bottom I actually got to take a refreshing dip in! :-) I was the only one in the group to brave the muddy colored water but once I ... read more

We caught 5 tuna, a Dorado and a swordfish on our trip to Tobago. We saw a 400 pound Leatherback Turtle lay her eggs on the beach. The turtle crawled up on the beach, dug a hole in the sand, layed her eggs, disguised the egg location and then swam out to sea. ... read more

We woke up and had our last breakfast. It really really rained a LOT! Virgin does check in, chill out so the rep, the Virgin Atlantic people and the airport security turned up at the hotel. It was fairly straight forward and quick. It meant we got rid of our bags nice and early so didn’t have to worry about them all day. We then had our final swim in the sea and showered before checking out of our room. We watch the fishermen hauling in some fish (I snoozed a bit) and had some strawberry smoothies. We then went and read books after lunch whilst waiting for our pick up. The bus came on time and we headed to the airport. As we had already checked in we went straight through to the lounge. ... read more

The bus picked us up and we drove up the coast. It lashed it down with rain, the roads looked like rivers, we were glad it was someone else driving. The guide was brilliant and told us lots of interesting things about the island. Our first stop for a drink at a view point and as we got off the bus the rain stopped, perfect timing. As we got back on the rain came again. Our second stop, the Argyle Falls, and the rain stopped again. We walked through the rain forest for twenty minutes and came to the falls, it was beautiful. I changed into my swim wear, ... read more

An early breakfast was required as we had an early pick up from the dive centre. The boss arrived in his pickup truck and headed to the centre, the driver chatted away. He asked Wayne if he liked driving, and if he could drive. The next thing we knew he had pulled over and given Wayne the keys telling us to take ourselves to the centre as he lived just here and it would save him the need for a taxi. Fortunately Wayne was happy to drive, when we arrived the girl at the centre was a bit surprised that we had come ourselves, but it is the Caribbean so anything goes! We sorted our kit out and loaded the van. I squeezed into the back with 2 other divers and Wayne and the dive ... read more

I lost the original text for this entry. I am sad about this! Wayne and I spent a day diving in Tobago. We saw lots of lovely things. We went for 'local food' for our lunch. I had crab and dumplings. The dumplings were pasty white slime things, the crab was almost whole and uncracked, covered in a scanky brown sauce. When I asked how to get to the meat, the answer was with my teeth. CRACK - the noise was horrid, the taste disgusting and it felt really bad. I had a go and gave up! Wayne had an equally bad dinner Roti - it was grotti!! We went to a local store and bought the funniest named condom ever as a souvenier for our Biker pal Jan! Rough Rider - with a girl biker ... read more

We woke breakfasted etc as usual. We had the day to ourselves and decided to go out again in the car on a little explore. We headed around the coast to Crown Point, and went on a magical mystery tour. Our aim: To find Robinson Crusoes Cave (I read the Penguin version before leaving home). The cave was marked (very approximately) on a map I had from my mum - last used in the 1990’s. We drove to the bay the cave was supposedly on. The road took us around the perimeter of the airport very close to the runway and the planes. The road lead to some bushes and then stopped! We turned around and had another look to see any signs of the cave, and I spotted a tiny sign, we followed it ... read more
