On tuesday evening the 3rd it started raining. The next day we wanted to rent a car, but when we looked out of the window it was still raining. So change of plan then. The main reason for this trip is to go to the Word baseball classic games. We allready made a reservation for the tickets, but they need to be picked up at the baseball stadion (Hiram Bithorn). Since it's a bad day for making photos or siteseeing, we can do that today. First stop is the busstop. We expected the bus to come several times in an hour, but waited 40 minutes before the bus arrives. Recently they changed the schedule, so it's not so clear to us when the busses are coming now. We thought we could go straight to the stadion, ... read more

Monday the second was a nice day, the sun was shining and it was warm. After the Starbucks discovery, we just walked in the neighbourhood of our hotel. The beach is only 30 meters from the hotel, it's not big, but looks nice. You only can't swim there, it's too dangerous. The part of San Juan we're in is called Condado. It's an old part of the town (but not so old as Old San Juan). They do a lot of reconstruction and we see quite a lot of new, expensive hotels around our hotel. The first 9 days of the holiday we are just in an old hotel called El Canario by the sea. It only has 25 rooms, breakfast is nothing (only some bread with butter and jam, cornflakes with milk and coffee tea ... read more

After more then 24 hours travelling, we finally arrived at Puerto Rico in the middle of the night. We started hour holiday in Brussels. It's a long time ago that we took a flight from Brussel airport, but since july 2008 Holland has a an extra flight tax of 45 euro per person and Schiphol raised several taxes at the same time, it saves us almost 200 euro's to leave from Brussel. Brussel is as far from our place as Schiphol airport, so no differences in time. We are used to have the luggage go in transit straight to our destination, but in Newark that's not the way it works. You pick up your luggage at the baggage claim and bring it immediately to the baggage drop. How silly. We also had to fill in a ... read more

Carolyn and I are celebrating our 25th Anniversary with a week's visit to Puerto Rico. Left Boston this morning around 7:45AM and landed in San Juan at 12:15PM (they are 1 hour ahead). Temperature was a balmy 80F upon arrival. While the plane was making its way to the terminal we saw a 2-foot Iguana strolling along the edge of the runway - we're not in New England anymore! Drove out to Caguas and met Mara, whose chalet we are renting for the week. The ride to her place was spectacular. LIke a tropical roller coaster. Everything is green and lush. Caguas is south of San Juan and sits in the low mountains that stretch across the Island. The Chalet has a great view across a steep ravine to the hills on the other side. My ... read more

These pictures are super cool. Its the first day of our adventure and it starts with Surfing in the northwest coast of Puerto Rico. The difference from the North Coast of the Island to the Southern coast is amazing! The Atlantic Ocean was rocky with waves, while the Caribbean Sea was flat and sandy. It was great to take surfing lessons and everyone on the trip got to ride a wave!!!! Everyone agreed that they were going to practice this sport when they went back home!... read more

Central America Caribbean » Puerto Rico January 23rd 2009

Our Puerto Rico trip in Feb. 2008 Anna and I took our annual trip to a warmer climate in January last year. Puerto Rico is a fantastic island full of diverse culture and sites to see. We rented a car for the 3 full days we were there, which admittantly was too short of a trip to see all we wanted. You would need a good 5 days at least to drive the island. It was quite an adventure guessing which narrow, often nameles, roads to take. We made our way in and out of the jungle and to all sides but missed the beaches and some sites due to closings on those days. Go to El Yunge and hike until you can no more. Try the quisine in Historic San Juan and random restaurants as ... read more
