An easy boat ride and 4x4 trip brought us to Panama City. It felt both awkward and pretty good to be back in the world of comfort, electricity and modern facilities. Koska sain huoneen tunnin myöhässä, pyysin saada olla huoneessa lähtöpäivänä samaan hintaan klo 13 asti. Nukuin taas aika huonosti, vain noin 6 tuntia, kuten yleensä matkapäivän alla. Ennen aamupalaa hoidin check-inin tabletilla. Päätin varata paikan Economy Plus -luokassa 60 euron lisähintaan. Aamiaisen jälkeen kävin vielä klo 10.30 ottamassa aurinkoa noin vartin verran ilman paitaa ja aurinkorasvoja. Olin sopinut taksimatkan lentokentälle 25 dollarin hintaan kuskin kanssa, joka heitti minut pari päivää aiemmin vanhastakaupungista keskustaan päin. Hänhän oli antanut puhelinnumeronsa ja viestittelimme Whatsapin välityksellä. Hän tuli paikalle vähän ennen kahta. Taksimatkan aikana ilmeni muutama seikka (keskustelimme siis espanjaksi). Hyödynsin eilen ostamaani joukkoliikenteen korttia. Liikuin bussilla, metrolla ja taksilla. Toki kävelin myös paljon. Kävelin ensin rantaväylälle. Hyppäsin siellä bussiin, ja bussin pääteasemalta otin taksin vanhaankaupunkiin (Casco Viejo). Vietin aikaa Panaman kanavan museossa. Loppupäästä espanjankieliset tekstit alkoivat jo väsyttää. Poikkesin sitten limsalla ja kroisantilla. Takaisin palasin taksilla lähimmälle metroasemalle. Kuljettaja antoi lapulla puhelinnumeronsa, jotta voisin tilata häneltä kyydin tarvittaessa; oli jo puhetta kyydistä lentokentälle. Jatkoimme viestintää sittemmin Whatsapissa. Ajoin metrolla ja palasin bussilla keskustaan päin. Jokin mielenosoitus hidasti liikennettä. Tarkoitus oli mennä sitten bussilla hotellin lähelle, mutta hyppäsinkin bussiin joka meni hiukan epätoivottua reittiä. Piti kävellä pari kilometriä hotelliin. Since leaving Mexico we have traveled through Central America by chicken bus, at least 50 buses. And on only a couple of them have we seen backpackers. I am so proud of us as this is no easy feat when you don't speak Spanish. We haven't felt threatened or scared and people always smiling and ready to help. Glen always helping the people with their produce ie bags of rice, and heavy loads. And so we have loved the experience and it's been incredibly cheap way to travel. But to meet the ordinary people has been the most rewarding. At each different country border controls, we have dodged the tourist buses. It was finally time to leave South America. Though fun and although I had seen and done some amazing things, there were elements of frustration that accompanied me throughout my time there. This continued right up until the last, having had my water bottle, my universal adaptor and flip-flops nicked within a few days. WTF backpacker people. For good measure, South America decided to give me a final dose of bedbug bites to send me on my way. To be completely honest, I felt that I had had my fill of South America and that I was ready to move onto somewhere new.
