Lanky Cat
He´s a master at begging for food. Likes tortillas, but likes turkey skin from the soup Orphilia gave me better. I have a new family. Donia Orphilia is about my age, and she warmly welcomed me into her home. Her niece Sabrina is a talkative 7 year old who is learning English, and who translates for Orphilia when she needs it. Her sister Elda and her parents also live in the same house.
I have my own room painted in the classic yuk green, and a private bathroom. I can stare at the underside of the tile roof, criss crossed by electrical wires. It is quite cozy. Last night I was cold, however, even though it was about 80 degrees F. The family has four dogs and two cats, who all seem to get along well. The cats are lanky, with the weirdest triangular faces. I have not yet met the dogs. So far I love her cooking. A plate of fried bananas and sour cream, and a homemade cake was for breakfast. I thought there would not be many vegetables, but she served me a collard green type dish for lunch, with spicy chicken and a cabbage salad.
Orphilia is a great teacher so far, and I´m sure I will quickly learn more Spanish just by being in

When I arrived at the school yesterday, the directors each hugged me for mother´s day. They observe the day even here. I miss both my sons, but I tell everyone here about them. That´s what you talk about with people, your families. And I´ve learned that most families are big. The old man on the bus had 6 kids, and he patiently recalled and recited each one´s age for me. The woman in the bus station, Francisca, had 4 children, and I learned all their ages also. The young woman who sat next to me in the bus lived with her grandmother with her brothers and sisters. Family seems foremost.
My teacher, Yessinia, is quite young and a new mother. Her husband is not working, so she is concerned about finances. She gave me a written Spanish test, and I did not do so well, but I suppose I must start somewhere. I got the workbook for second grade. There are six levels. At least I did not have to start at first grade.
Copan Ruinas seems so quiet, small. Why don´t we design our towns sensibly like this, with an open community plaza, where

Facing the plaza. people laze around, socialize. Kids were using their skateboards, old guys were discussing important issues (probably problems they were having with women.) I went out after dark, and I had no concern at all walking around town, because there were so many people out and about, and that´s just what people do in the evening. During the day, now, as I type this entry, the streets buzz with traffic, where they´re going I don´t know because really this place is small. The cars and trucks and tuk-tuks rattle along the cobble streets, they honk and they rush. But at night all is quiet,(except did you know that roosters crow at 2:30 am?) and the young men gather in the pool halls, and the touristas--very few--gather in a few restaurants to drink and socialize.
I will like being here for a few weeks.
Downloading photos was difficult, and I played with the process for almost an hour to no avail. I will find another internet cafe where perhaps I can get a little more help. I regret not having the photos yet.
