So after the parade, Jenna and I got out money from the bank then taxied it home to finish packing. Soon after, the 6 of us (Jenna, Julie, Nadia, Jill, Chris, and I) were on our way to the bus station. It's amazing how competitive buses are. We were heading to one bus station and had guys from a smaller van-type bus telling us an earlier time of departure. Both were trying to get our attention and take our bags. We decided on the "Rapidito" van which left earlier. This van took us and a few other locals to Siguatapeque, which was about 45 minutes away. It was a nice drive through mountains and the Canadian Red Cross painted top ten ways to prevent H.I.V. on the sides on the mountains, so Chris, Jenna, and I ... read more

We left Comayagua early again, and took two buses to the town of La Ceiba. We needed to get there for 4pm, where we had a connecting ferry to take us out to sea, and to the Bay Islands off the Hondruran coast, and to our next destination, Roatan. Our ferry was seemed big and modern, and was crammed with holidaymakers, mostly from the States. As we left the harbour the water was calm and the sun shining. We went to the top of the ferry to enjoy the sun, and sea air. Then as we got out to sea, the winds were blowing hard. Water was sprayed right over the top of the boat, getting everyone drenched. At first it was good fun, then the waves began to get bigger and bigger and we were ... read more

After the Hurricane in Honduras...it kept on raining for a couple of days. I decided to start my diving course anyway...and guess what... I was lucky. The weather cleared up and the diving was cool. Especialy my dive to one of the shipwrecks was real cool! Down there on 30 meters there was not much of marine life, but my eyes couldn't stay a way of the ship anyways. Besides diving the only thing to do on Utila is get in to the nightlife and so it was the Tranquila bar for me and my fellow divestudents and travelers. Nice Island, but after 6 days I had seen it and was ready for some real action. Since I was in New Zealand 2 years ago, I wanted to learn some white water kayaking. In Kiwiland I ... read more

Well, I'm in a funky hotel here in La Cieba, Honduras waiting to catch the boat to the Island of Utila tomorrow morning. It's really hot and humid here, which I'm not used to lately. I don't have guide book for this town, so I'm winging it and thus the funky hotel. It's only one night. I hear that computer costs are sky high on the island which is an hour ferry ride from here, so you'll probably have to wait until I get back to a computer back on the mainland to hear how the diving went. Yesterday I went to the Copan Ruins just on this side of the Honduran border. The ruins were nice, but small. They aren't Mayan but similar enough for me. The sight was small but impressive with some very ... read more

Pico Bonito is a national parc just outside of La Ceiba. To get there take a taxi (150L) or the local bus in the direction of Yuruca. The drive up is gorgeous. You follow the Rio Cangreal into the mountains covered in bright greens, where clouds hide in the valleys and waterfalls seem to appear out of nowhere just around the next bend. There are three tour companies that offer pretty well the same activities. One of them is a upscale deal though. It's called Las Cascadas and looked relatively new. Not the place for poor packers, but if you've got a little to splurge it looked beautiful. The other two companies are called Jungle River Tours and Omega Jungle Tours. The Jungle River people also have a hostel the city of La Ceiba called the ... read more

Caldo de Calzado Hello dear readers, I've finally caught up to date with my journal entries and thus it is time for another edition of Caldo de Calzado, my attempt at a travel food column. We've made our way down the northern coast of Honduras from Tela to the small Garifuna villages of La Encenada and Triumfo de la Cruz, to La Ceiba where I'm presently writing you from. La Rustique First up on the agenda, a restaurant recommendation for anyone in la Ceiba that we checked out late last night. The little place called La Rustique is on the corner of St. Isidore and 3a Calle on the third floor of this little unassuming building. You could easily miss it, but look for the palapa and red Christmas lights on their rooftop terrace and you ... read more

Hei Allesammans! Ruinerna ... read more

My fourth night in Honduras and I am STILL sick. I had originally planned on going right to the Bay Islands to take my PADI diving course, but since I have been coughing and congested I thought I would rest on the coast a couple days prior to leaving for Utila. However, I seem more congested now than ever --- a big no no for diving, I am told --- so I am off to Trujillo tomorrow for a couple days of lazing on the beaches. I know, Ì'm sure that all of you stuck in the throes of midwestern winters are really feeling sorry for me right now, but it has actually thrown a big crimp in my plans to be in and out of Honduras in 10 days. Unfortunately as well, I can't seem ... read more
